Celebrating Valentine’s Day is always a lot of
fun at Shady Oaks! This year is extra special as
we have four couples that reside at Shady Oaks
together. Pictured are Oddie and Anna Bucholdt,
Armour and Lavon McCarty, Robert and Phyllis
Morrow and Don and Katy Schrad. Additionally,
photographs were taken of all the married
residents and their sweethearts.
The Adaza Thursday Club’s Winter
Picnic on the 2nd of February was a
good time for those who were able to
attend. There was plenty of delicious
food. Memories of what happened
some years ago were shared. There
were a couple folks there for the
first time and we hope they’ll return
next year on the 1st Thursday of
February. The weather this year was
good enough we could have had a
picnic in the park. That’s lots better
than the snow and ice we have some
years.
afternoon, Feb. 2. They had driven
What is a “flivver?” This word
appeared on a vocabulary list that
a high school student received
in English class, related to the
book they are reading, To Kill a
Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This
story takes place in Alabama during
the Depression. The main character,
a little white girl called “Scout,” tells
of her adventures and observations.
Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, is a
lawyer who takes a case of defending
an African-American man, Tom,
who was accused of a crime he did
not commit. Atticus knows that
Tom’s chance for acquittal is slim,
but he wants to reveal the truth to the
community.
This is a famous book with a
gripping story. Some of us will
remember the 1962 film version,
nominated for eight academy
awards. It starred Gregory Peck,
Back to our question, what is a
“flivver?” According to the Encarta
dictionary, it is a small, cheap, and
usually old car.
Perhaps now is a good time to find
the tax information that we have
been collecting all year. Perhaps
your “shoe box” of tax receipts is
full. Perhaps you have more than
one shoe box! (The tax preparers
might appreciate it if they receive all
of our information well before the
“April 15th rush.”) Tax preparation
seems to go a little easier if a person
is good at math. Speaking of math,
have you heard the one about the
little girl practicing addition at
school? “Teacher,” said the little
girl, “I just added these figures ten
times, and here are the ten answers.”
We don’t have to be in too much
of a hurry to do our taxes, though.
There is a saying, “The ‘hurrieder’ I
go, the ‘behinder’ I get.”
REMEMBER WHEN
Remember before there was
a Sunnyview? Remember
before there was a Sunny Knoll?
Remember when East Lake Street
stopped before Brower Street, and
there was no Elementary School or
United Methodist Church on Brower
Street? (Remember when there was
no Brower Street?)
Hone in on
How a healthy diet and lifestyle can protect you from heart disease
From Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield
While indulging on chocolates
is synonymous with Valentine’s
Day, a healthy diet and lifestyle
are the best weapons you have
to protect yourself from heart
problems.
February is American Heart
Month, and heart disease is the
leading cause of death in the
United States and a key cause of
disability.
According to the Iowa
Department of Public Health,
30 percent of the total deaths in
Iowa were from stroke and heart
disease in 2010.
A study in the latest New
England Journal of Medicine
offers a simple way to predict the
risk of a fatal or debilitating heart
attack or stroke for a middle-aged
person over the rest of his or her
life.
“If at age 45 you have two or
more of either elevated blood
pressure, cholesterol, diabetes,
or smoking, and you’re a man,
then there’s a 50-50 proposition
that you will have a heart attack
or a stroke during your remaining
lifespan,” said cardiologist
Donald Lloyd-Jones, who
headed the study at Northwestern
University’s Feinberg School of
Medicine. Women with two risk
factors have about a 30 percent
How You Can Avoid
7 Costly Mistakes if
Hurt at Work
Each year thousands of Iowans are
hurt at work, but many fail to learn
the Injured Workers Bill of Rights which includes: 1.
Payment of Mileage at $.555 per mile 2. Money for
Permanent Disability 3. 2nd Medical Opinion in Admitted
Claims. . . . A New Book reveals the other rights, 5 Things
to Know Before Signing Forms or Hiring an Attorney and
much more. The book is offered at no cost because since
1997 Iowa Work Injury Attorney Corey Walker has seen the
consequences of client's costly mistakes and he does want to
see you make one. If you or a loved one have been hurt at
work and do not have an attorney claim your copy (while
supplies last) Call Now (800)-707-2552, ext. 311 (24 Hour
chance.
Having even one risk factor
dramatically increases the risk
of heart disease. And 95 percent
of middle-aged Americans (ages
45-55) have at least one risk
factor for heart disease.
Fortunately, this number is
decreasing over time, and Iowans
can follow these healthy eating
and living tips to safeguard their
hearts from disease:
• Choose lean meats
and poultry without skin and
prepare them without added
saturated and trans fat.
• Select fat-free, one
percent fat, and low-fat dairy
products.
• Cut back on foods high
in dietary cholesterol. Aim
to eat less than 300 mg of
cholesterol each day.
• Cut back on beverages
and foods with added sugars.
• Select and purchase
foods lower in salt/sodium.
• Keep an eye on your
portion sizes.
Along with eating right, getting
some regular, daily exercise
can reduce your risk of fatal
heart disease. At least 30 to 60
minutes of moderately intense
physical activity most days of the
week offer substantial benefits
