Celebrating Valentine’s Day is always a lot of 

fun at Shady Oaks! This year is extra special as 

we have four couples that reside at Shady Oaks 

together. Pictured are Oddie and Anna Bucholdt,

The Adaza Thursday Club’s Winter 

Picnic on the 2nd of February was a 

good time for those who were able to 

attend. There was plenty of delicious 

food. Memories of what happened 

some years ago were shared. There 

were a couple folks there for the 

first time and we hope they’ll return 

next year on the 1st Thursday of 

February. The weather this year was 

good enough we could have had a 

picnic in the park. That’s lots better 

than the snow and ice we have some 

years.

a Valentine’s exchange between the residents took 

place with Cupid delivering all of the valentines.

KNOLL 

This week at Sunny Knoll we 

played bingo as well as had spa day. 

On Tuesday they worked on their 

poster pages and enjoyed happy 

hour that afternoon. The snack for 

happy hour was pizza bites made out 

of bagels. On Wednesday we had a 

busy day. Starting in the morning 

we had devotions and bible study 

in the afternoon. That evening we 

took a few residents to the Meridian 

Singers in Manson. They had a blast! 

Some of the residents back at the 

facility enjoyed game night playing 

dominos. On Thursday we made 

valentines and played Wii bowling 

in the afternoon. Friday morning 

was very chilly and a perfect day for 

men’s coffee. Friday afternoon we 

enjoyed ice cream social. 

We are looking forward to 

Valentines next week! We are having 

a party as well as crowning a king 

and queen! Stay tuned for the results!

Connie Jones 

Wakefield, NE – Connie Jones, 

91, formerly of Lake City, died 

Thursday, February 9, 2012 at the 

Wakefield Care Center in Wakefield, 

NE. Funeral services will be held 

at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 18th 

at Woodlawn Christian Church in 

Lake City with Pastor Bill Kanne 

officiating and burial in the Cedar 

Cemetery at Rinard, IA. Visitation 

will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at 

Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City 

with O.E.S. services at 7 p.m. at 

Lampe Funeral Home. 

Constance I. Ringgenberg, 

daughter of Dewey and Goldie 

(Jensen) Ringgenberg was born near 

Lytton, Iowa on August 3, 1920. 

She attended school at Lohrville 

and Rinard, Iowa, graduating from 

Rinard High School in 1937. She 

was united in marriage to Eldon 

(Spud) Jones on June 26, 1938 at 

the Woodlawn Christian Church 

parsonage in Lake City. To this 

union were born two sons, Robert A 

and Ronald E. Jones. 

Connie worked at Feddersen’s 

Store in Lytton, The country Café 

at Roelyn and Stringer’s Grocery in 

Farnhamville. She and her husband 

farmed together until 1990 when 

they retired and moved to Lake City. 

In 1983 they were the first volunteers 

in Calhoun County for the “Road to 

Recovery” program for cancer. In 

1996 they received the Governor’s 

Volunteer Award.

70, died Sunday, February 12, 2012 

at Stewart Memorial Hospital in 

Lake City. Funeral services will be

Lutheran Church in Lake City with 

burial in the Lake City Cemetery. 

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. 

Tuesday at Lampe Funeral Home in

August 2, 1941 in Lake City to 

Arthur and Martha (Batz) Roller. 

He graduated from Lake City High

Earl & Pauline Walters on Thursday 

afternoon, Feb. 2. They had driven 

to Rockwell City to visit their 

cousin, Gary Johnson, who lives in 

Sunny Knoll Care Center. 

Construction continues at 

Sunnyview. The suite being 

remodeled (two apartments being 

combined into one) is shaping up. 

This will be another interesting floor 

plan. 

What is a “flivver?” This word 

appeared on a vocabulary list that 

a high school student received 

in English class, related to the 

book they are reading, To Kill a 

Mockingbird by Harper Lee. This 

story takes place in Alabama during 

the Depression. The main character, 

a little white girl called “Scout,” tells 

of her adventures and observations. 

Scout’s father, Atticus Finch, is a 

lawyer who takes a case of defending 

an African-American man, Tom, 

who was accused of a crime he did 

not commit. Atticus knows that 

Tom’s chance for acquittal is slim, 

but he wants to reveal the truth to the 

community. 

This is a famous book with a 

gripping story. Some of us will 

remember the 1962 film version, 

nominated for eight academy 

awards. It starred Gregory Peck,

“flivver?” According to the Encarta 

dictionary, it is a small, cheap, and 

usually old car. 

Perhaps now is a good time to find 

the tax information that we have 

been collecting all year. Perhaps 

your “shoe box” of tax receipts is 

full. Perhaps you have more than 

one shoe box! (The tax preparers 

might appreciate it if they receive all 

of our information well before the 

“April 15th rush.”) Tax preparation 

seems to go a little easier if a person 

is good at math. Speaking of math, 

have you heard the one about the 

little girl practicing addition at 

school? “Teacher,” said the little 

girl, “I just added these figures ten 

times, and here are the ten answers.” 

We don’t have to be in too much 

of a hurry to do our taxes, though. 

There is a saying, “The ‘hurrieder’ I 

go, the ‘behinder’ I get.”

pit scheduled 

A special exception permit 

hearing has been scheduled before 

the Calhoun County Board of 

Adjustment regarding the operation 

of a gravel mining operation near the 

Cottonwood Cemetery in Jackson 

County. 

Some citizens with loved ones 

buried at the cemetery had expressed 

concerns at a previous meeting 

of the board of adjustment. That 

meeting turned out to simply be an 

informational meeting rather than a 

formal hearing since no request for a 

permit had been filed. 

The next meeting is scheduled for 

Feb. 23 at 1:30 p.m. at the Calhoun 

County Courthouse.

The South Central Calhoun boys’ 

basketball team finished the season 

with a win and a loss, both in home 

games. During a hard-fought game 

on Feb. 7, the Titans won against 

East Sac 56 to 51. 

During a Feb. 10 game, the Titans 

lost to Boyer Valley 57 to 67.

considerable skills to the state 

tournament at the Wells Fargo arena 

in Des Moines. Action for SCC will 

begin at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16. 

At the district wrestling meet 

in Atlantic on Saturday, Feb. 11, 

Colten Riley won the district 

championship in the 195 weight 

class and Chase Goodman won the 

district championship in the 120
