Congratulations to the St. Jude Volunteer Services department and to all our dedicated volunteers.
“It is such an honor for the volunteer program at St. Jude to receive this award. Our entire team is so
proud, and we recognize what makes this program special is the strong desire that our volunteers have
to affect the lives of our patients and families and to contribute positively to our great mission,” Kathryn
said. The added bonus was a $500 check to St. Jude for winning the award.
María Chandler honored with Nienhuis Award
Eleven outstanding volunteers
were nominated for the 2010 Sheryl
K. Nienhuis Memorial Volunteer
Service Award – Nihad Al Nouri,
María Chandler, Betty Christy,
Cynthia Connolly, Georgina Gilbertson,
Maureen Kennedy, Gayatri
Mamidanna, Robert McVeigh, Pat
Pennington, Patty Stephens and
Shankar Sadasivan. Each has made
volunteering at St. Jude a priority,
and each has demonstrated a strong
commitment to the St. Jude mission.
Created in 2002, this award
was established to honor annually a
St. Jude volunteer who exemplifies
qualities that the late Sheryl Nienhuis
brought to her volunteerism.
This year’s panel of judges
included Senior Vice President
of Human Resources Mary Anna
Quinn, last year’s co-winners Martha
Williford and Memina Franklin,
Senior Vice President of Patient
Care Services Pam Dotson, RN, and
ALSAC Sports Marketing Manager
Kevin Nienhuis, who represents
the Nienhuis family. They concentrated
on the activities the volunteer
performed, the commitment the
individual exhibited, the impact the
volunteer’s service made and the
nominee’s spirit of volunteerism.
The winner of this prestigious
award for 2010 is 25-year volunteer
María Chandler.
“I remember meeting Sheryl
Nienhuis and watching her genuine
and loving interaction with patients,
families, staff and volunteers,”
María says. “I will always be proud
to be a part of the Sheryl Nienhuis
legacy and the St. Jude family.”
María began volunteering at
St. Jude in March 1985 when a close
friend, who was a Spanish interpreter,
asked her to join the Hispanic
interpreters group. “I loved the idea
of helping children and families
from Spanish speaking countries,”
María says. “There is an immediate
relief in their faces when someone
who speaks their language is there
to explain and assist during their
difficult time”
“I wanted to be part of a team
whose mission is to help save the
world’s children,” she remembers.
“I am happy to play a small part
in helping these kids fulfill their
dreams when they return to their
homelands. This and the comfort
that volunteers bring to children and
their families are both humbling and
rewarding for all of us.”
For her first 19 years at St. Jude,
María reported to Social Work for
her volunteer shifts.
“María is an outstanding volunteer
who has always demonstrated
a strong commitment and amazing
compassion for our patients and
their families,” says Social Work
Director Fran Greeson. “She has
worked tirelessly to ensure that the
best volunteer and support services
are provided for our international
patients. She is truly a role model of
someone who gives of herself day
in and day out with enthusiasm and
dedication.”
In a nomination form for the
Sheryl Nienhuis Award, volunteer
Adriana de Benavides said, “In
her role as an interpreter, I have
witnessed how [María] handles the
various roles with talent. She advocates,
is a cultural broker, clarifier
and conduit. And through it all, her
main concern has always been the
well being of the patient.”
María, a member of the
Ladies of St. Jude, is also the
president of the International
Volunteer Interpreters Club.
“She is the one who gathers
[the international volunteers]
for meetings and organizes
efforts for activities,” Adriana
said. “In every activity she
does, you see her passion for
helping others.”
When asked what makes
María Chandler a special
volunteer, Interpreter Services
Coordinator Marc Friedman
wrote: “People are not supposed to
get younger and more energetic and
creative over the years. But have
you met María Chandler? A long
time ago, María helped launch the
St. Jude International Volunteer
program when language services
were unheard of. Years passed. New
standards for interpreters emerged.
María was there to usher those new
standards in, as well as to recruit and
train more volunteer interpreters.
This is what special volunteers do.
“Beneath that gentle smile and
the soft-spoken demeanor, there is a
quiet energy,” he continued. “Those
who love María know that energy. It
percolates new ideas, and it mobilizes
others to roll up their sleeves.
“A special volunteer is as reliable
as the law of gravity. María
is there, and you know she will be
there next time, too. That is the
epitome of a special volunteer!”
It is clear that María Chandler
has made an enormous impact at
St. Jude. To all St. Jude volunteers
she offers these words of encouragement:
“Keep supporting this special,
caring place. I know our patients,
parents and loved ones are very
appreciative of the many ways that
you touch their lives.” St. Jude is appreciative
of María Chandler and the
many volunteers she inspires with
her endless dedication.
María Chandler
holds the Sheryl K.
Nienhuis Memorial
Volunteer Award as
she is congratulated
by her husband,
Bob, and Volunteer
Services Director
Kathryn Berry Carter.

St. Jude Auxiliary
By Doris Burton, member
I can’t believe that we are in our
sixth month of 2010. It has been a
very busy year for our Auxiliary
The Women’s
Club held a wine
tasting social
event at Carmen
Sandoval’s home as
a recruiting effort.
There were lots of
wines and appetizers,
and a couple of
new members joined
the club.
Club members also helped
patients and siblings with their golfing
skills during the Golf-A-Round
event held in conjunction with the
St. Jude Classic golf tournament in
June.
New Women’s Club officers
were elected during our May meeting.
They include President Lindsey
Wilkerson, Vice President Laurie
Webby, Treasurer Jenifer Prather
and Secretary Roletta Ammons.
Laurie Webby is also our webmaster,
and she continues to update
volunteers. We just finished our first
Mother’s Day jewelry sale, which
was a huge success.
I want to thank all of our volunteers
who helped at the jewelry
sale. I really enjoyed helping. There
were so many different things
to choose from and such a
walk-in closet fit for royalty, then
you should visit the St. Jude Dream
Home. A closet off the master
bedroom has drawn raves from visitors.
The master bedroom is equally
stunning.
Members of the Ladies of
St. Jude again have been serving
as hosts for the Dream Home open
houses on weekends. The 4,632square-foot
house, built by Southern
Serenity Homes of Oakland, Tenn.,
is a Tudor style with timbered exterior
trim. It is located at 10582 Harvest
Oaks Drive, Collierville, Tenn.,
38017. This location is easy to find,
because it is near The Avenue at
Carriage Crossing shopping mall.
Co-chairs Aggie Wagner
and Marjorie Webster have ably
managed these open houses with
excellent help from their committee:
Mel Stanley, Jaymie Salley and
Radha Kumar. These ladies have
put in lots of time scheduling hosts
and managing the ticket sales for
the drawing that will determine the
winner of the house. Attendance at
open houses has been good. On the
opening night, called “Sneak Peek,”
494 people attended, and bought 164
tickets. Tickets are again $100 each.
Those who bought their tickets
early will have the added chance
to win a Honda Civic, donated by
Wolfchase Honda. At least 16 other
prizes will be awarded on drawing
day, which is Sunday, June 27.
At the “Volunteers Measure
Up” luncheon in April, the Ladies of
St. Jude were honored for providing
toys in 35 locations around the
hospital. We were also recognized
for hosting last year’s Dream Home
open houses, and for making sales
of $171,384 for the Christmas card
project, in partnership with ALSAC.
It was announced that we donated
$121,434 in equipment and supplies
to the hospital, as well as $16,950
to Volunteer Services and $33,000
By Sarah D. Pratt, member
to Child Life. Our members worked
4,301 volunteer hours in 2009.
Congratulations to Ladies of
St. Jude member María Chandler
who received the Sheryl Nienhuis
Memorial Volunteer Service Award.
And congratulations to LJS member
Betty Christy for being nominated
for this prestigious award.
One of our most active members
these days is Suzanne Hieserman,
who chairs our Art Parties for
the patients. She puts together a
party each month, with a variety of
media and materials involved. She
and her helpers say that patients and
siblings show great interest in creating
art.
At our March meeting, President
Joan Rodrigue honored our
newly appointed Life Members:
Mary Kay Kuhns, Valerie Clasgens,
Fran Costa, Nancy Kanne and,
posthumously, Kit Minkin. These
ladies entertained the rest of us with
memories from the early days of the
club.
We have the sad duty to report
the loss of LJS member Sandy
Lewis. VIP reported earlier the many
positions she had held at St. Jude,
from secretary to the first Medical
Director Donald Pinkel, MD, to
National Executive Secretary
for the ALSAC-St. Jude
Boards of Directors
and Governors.
After her retirement
she
joined the
Ladies of
St. Jude.
It was
during
her
years
as
Volunteer
Services
director
that she
influenced the Ladies of St. Jude so
much.
She was able to tell LSJ of the
needs that our group could meet.
More than once the Ladies refurbished
the front lobby, back when it
was one of the few places for families
to gather. When she realized that
patient families had no convenient
place to do laundry, Sandy suggested
that LSJ buy a washer and
dryer to be placed in the hospital for
their use. Also in the early days, she
suggested that LSJ buy a sign for the
top of the hospital building, since
there was no marker to identify it for
travelers who were approaching. In
addition, she steered us to buy several
vans for transporting patients.
The Christmas card project
could not have taken shape without
Sandy. She arranged for outside
help for printing costs, and she even
wrote some of the messages for the
cards.
Our members agree that Sandy
always greeted us with a big smile.
She was a “perky” lady, whose
enthusiasm was contagious. She was
a motivator, who put her heart and
soul into all she did. We will miss
her.
open house dates.

Quilt of Hope
requests entries
Did you know that a quilt can
tell a story? The St. Jude Quilt of
Hope helps tell the story of
St. Jude. The squares were submitted
by patients, family members,
staff, volunteers, donors and many
others who love St. Jude. Panels of
this quilt can be viewed in the four
glass display cases near the Kay
Kafe. The Quilt of Hope includes
more than 50 panels, and they are
rotated monthly through the display.
The St. Jude Women’s Club
would like to renew this project by
calling for new entries. New quilt
panel submissions should be 46
inches by 46 inches. Please use 100
percent washable cotton or polyester
blend fabric, thread and batting. All
fabrics must be pre-washed. You
may use the St. Jude fabrics sold
by Hancock Fabrics, but this is not
required.
Entries should showcase
St. Jude patients, parents, staff, volunteers
or donors. If you label your
panel, please write with permanent
marker or stitch the words. For
the sake of privacy, do not include
full names or addresses on these
labels. Please add a panel slot (about
four inches tall) all the way across
the back of each panel at the top.
This will allow the Women’s Club
members to hang your panel in the
display case.
To learn more about submitting
a Quilt of Hope panel, call or e-mail
Welcome new RMH
volunteer coordinator
Help us extend a warm welcome to
Sarah Lacy, the new volunteer coordinator
for The Ronald McDonald House of
Memphis. We asked her a few questions
to help you get to know her better. If
you have an opportunity to meet Sarah,
please welcome her to the St. Jude
family.
What led you to pursue a position at The
Ronald McDonald House of Memphis?
It was near Thanksgiving and every
Sarah Lacy
year my family cooks a meal for a nearby
charity or participates in serving food at a shelter. I thought that it would
be great to do this at Ronald McDonald House of Memphis. I got on the
website and noticed that there was a job opportunity in development, and
the rest is history.
What were you doing before you came to RMH?
After I graduated from University of Tennessee, Knoxville, I moved
to Nashville to pursue a career in politics. I got a job as a financial deputy
of a campaign for a Tennessee senator, and then worked as a clerk for the
Tennessee House of Representatives. I moved to Memphis from Nashville
to attend law school at the University of Memphis School of Law. After a
year, I felt that was not the right path for me and decided to pursue a career
in non-profit.
What do you hope to accomplish at RMH? Any changes on the horizon?
My goal is to make each and every volunteer feel appreciated and a part
of what makes Ronald McDonald House what it is. Our house, special event
and group volunteers are so vital. It is also my goal to schedule a meal or
activity every day of the month for the families here at Ronald McDonald
House. That is so important to me because it gives the families time to focus
on each other and not have to worry about what to prepare for dinner.
What excites you most about your new position and about RMH?
I love the interaction with the volunteers and families. I am fortunate
to be able to work with people who make the choice each day to come in
to volunteer at Ronald McDonald House. It is amazing to work with such
wonderful people who give so much of their time to others.
Can you tell us something fun about yourself – a hobby, favorite activity?
I love to be outdoors! My husband and I like to take our dog, Sadie,
hiking. I am a huge animal lover. In Nashville, I volunteered for an animal
shelter, and I have started volunteering at the Humane Society of Memphis
and Shelby County.
Has anything happened to you in your time with RMH that made you feel like
you definitely chosen the right position for you?
Every day solidifies that I made the right decision to work with such a
wonderful organization. I feel so lucky to work for an organization whose
mission is so important to each person who walks through the front door,
including staff, volunteers and the families.
