as noting cultural variations to both positive and negative aspects <strong>of</strong> face, none<br />

has systematically applied itself to the study <strong>of</strong> these fundamental concepts<br />

over and throughout the flow <strong>of</strong> any piece <strong>of</strong> interaction (2.3). Following this, in<br />

discussing methodology, I pointed to the most appropriate data and data sites<br />

to conduct such an analysis, and identified the conceptual parameters which will<br />

guide this particular study (2.4).<br />

In the next chapter I want to take forward these conceptual, empirical,<br />

and analytical interests to consider how they might be combined to arrive at a<br />

workable methodology for the investigation <strong>of</strong> English and German facework. In<br />

short, I shall be attempting to identify a useable framework for the analysis <strong>of</strong><br />

facework in naturally occurring ongoing conversation in both cultures, with the<br />

concepts <strong>of</strong> the self as informed by positive social values, equilibrium, and both<br />

positive and negative face needs as central organising features in talk.<br />
