Transcription Conventions
The conversational data presented in this study has been transcribed
following the general methodology employed in Conversational Analysis (see
ten Have 1999 and Hutchby and Wooffit 1998 for overviews). This involves
the reproduction of the talk as it happened sequentially, that is, the words as
they were uttered in real time. As a result, phenomena such as overlap, false
starts, and incomplete utterances are included. The data will be presented
with a series of line numbers to aid discussion when referring to specific parts
of each transcript. In order to append this sequential representation, a series
of transcription conventions has been used. These are largely drawn from
those set out in Button and Lee (1987). The extent to which these have been
used is similar to that seen in Malone (1997). This technique has allowed me
to present salient aspects of the sequential organisation of talk as well as the
propositional content.
