The following shloka from the Shikshapatri<br />
provides valuable information about the materials<br />
to be used for ‘Urdhva Pundram’.<br />

ÜU¢²ü Ðê…¢±çà¢cÅïÝ ÜUïà¢Ú¢çβé¼ïÝ JJ ( çà¢ÿ¢¢.)<br />
(Tattu gopichandanen chandanenãthavã hareh.<br />
Kãryam poojãvashishten kesharãdiyuten cha.)<br />
Tilak, the holy mark shall be made out of<br />
the white clay, called ‘Gopi Chandanam’, or even<br />
could be of sandalwood paste. If required, this<br />
paste can be mixed with saffron etc. According<br />
to Shikshapatri Bhashya, there are many other<br />
types of materials which could also be used for<br />
‘Urdhva Pundram’.<br />
The Bhramhandapurana recommends the<br />
following, relating to the sourcing of the materials,<br />
which are to be used for ‘Urdhva Pundram’.<br />
