COMSEC Element –<br />

COMSEC End-item –<br />

Removable item <strong>of</strong> COMSEC equipment, assembly, or subassembly;<br />

normally consisting <strong>of</strong> a single piece or group <strong>of</strong> replaceable parts.<br />

Equipment or combination <strong>of</strong> components ready for use in a<br />

COMSEC application.<br />

COMSEC Equipment – Equipment designed to provide security to telecommunications by<br />

converting information to a form unintelligible to an unauthorized<br />

interceptor and, subsequently, by reconverting such information to its<br />

original form for authorized recipients; also, equipment designed<br />

specifically to aid in, or as an essential element <strong>of</strong>, the conversion<br />

process. COMSEC equipment includes crypto-equipment, cryptoancillary<br />

equipment, cryptographic production equipment, and<br />

authentication equipment.<br />

COMSEC Facility – Authorized and approved space used for generating, storing,<br />

repairing, or using COMSEC material.<br />

COMSEC Incident – Occurrence that potentially jeopardizes the security <strong>of</strong> COMSEC<br />

material or the secure electrical transmission <strong>of</strong> national security<br />

information or information governed by 10 U.S.C. Section 2315.<br />

COMSEC Insecurity –<br />

COMSEC Manager –<br />

COMSEC incident that has been investigated, evaluated, and<br />

determined to jeopardize the security <strong>of</strong> COMSEC material or the<br />

secure transmission <strong>of</strong> information.<br />

Individual who manages the COMSEC resources <strong>of</strong> an organization.<br />

COMSEC Material – Item designed to secure or authenticate telecommunications.<br />

COMSEC material includes, but is not limited to key, equipment,<br />

devices, documents, firmware, or s<strong>of</strong>tware that embodies or describes<br />

cryptographic logic and other items that perform COMSEC<br />

functions.<br />
