Flyndre and Cawdor Environmental Statement Section 3 Environmental Baseline the local distribution or abundance of any protected species (termed the disturbance offence). EPS include all species of cetaceans, marine turtles, the sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) and the otter (Lutra lutra). The otter and sturgeon are principally coastal species and will therefore not be present at the Flyndre and Cawdor developmental area. 3.2.1. HABITATS Of the habitat types listed in the Habitats Directive (Annex I) requiring protection, four of them occur or potentially occur in the UK offshore area (EC, 1999); sandbanks which are slightly covered by seawater at all times reefs ‐ bedrock reefs; made from continuous outcroppings of bedrock which may be of various topographical shape (e.g. pinnacles and offshore banks) ‐ stony reefs; aggregations of boulders and cobbles which may have some finer sediments in interstitial spaces ‐ biogenic reefs; formed by cold water corals (e.g. Lophelia pertusa) and the polychaete worm Sabellaria spinulosa submarine structures made by leaking gases submerged or partially submerged sea caves. Currently in UK offshore waters there are five sites that are designated as cSAC/SCI, six as cSAC’s and four dSACs, descriptions of which are given in Table 3‐6. Survey results of the proposed pipeline route (Gardline, 2010) and those previously carried out at the Flyndre well location identified no environmentally sensitive habitats, protected under Annex I of the EC Habitats Directive. From the distribution of Annex I habitat types it appears very unlikely that there will be any areas identified in the further environmental surveys worthy as designation as protected areas, nonetheless Maersk will continue to carry out environmental surveys of areas prior to any planned activities. Of the areas listed in Table 3‐6 the Dogger Bank is in closest proximity and lies approximately 120 km south of the development. The Scanner and Braemar pockmarks lie approximately 220 km and 280 km north of the development (Figure 3‐4). D/4114/2011 3 ‐ 11
