Flyndre and Cawdor Environmental Statement Section 3 Environmental Baseline 3. BASELINE ENVIRONMENT This section describes the baseline environment, that is, the current nature and status of the potentially affected area to identify potential receptors. This is required in order to identify the potential environmental impact of the development, and to provide a basis for assessing the potential interactions of the proposed development with the environment. This section has been prepared with reference to available literature, expertise, previous experience and survey data. There have been two principal environmental surveys carried out for the Flyndre and Cawdor developments, an environmental pipeline route survey (Gardline, 2011) and the Flyndre site survey (Gardline 2006). Summaries of the data from these surveys have been included in the relevant sections of this report. The environmental pipeline route survey has been provided in a CD accompanying the Environmental Statement. In 2006 as part of the environmental site survey for the Flyndre appraisal well, a environmental and habitat site survey was carried out in a 1 km area centred around the proposed drill location, the results of which are discussed here and have previously been reported in the W/3273/2006 ‐PON15b for the Flyndre well. The acquisition tools used were single echo sounder, sidescan sonar and two sub bottom profilers. An environmental survey was carried out in conjunction with the site survey, four camera stations which included the proposed well location and features to the north and south of the survey area and three grab stations were selected as the site was uniform and featureless on side scan sonar records. Once the Flyndre appraisal well had encountered commercial quantities an environmental baseline survey and habitat assessment was carried out of potential pipeline routes. At the time of the survey, there were two potential hosts the Talisman operated Clyde platform and the Maersk Operated Janice FPU. The environmental assessment consisted of a geophysical survey and habitat investigation (Gardline, 2011). The environmental survey was completed in conjunction with a geophysical survey and habitat assessment survey, in order to establish the baseline physio‐chemical characteristics and benthic community over the proporsed pipeline route corridor. The geophysical survey used single‐ and multi‐beam echo sounders, sidescan sonar, magnetometer, pinger, boomer, coring and CPT equipment to provide a detailed assessment of the area. The habitat survey used a shallow water digital stills and camera system and benthic day grab. Environmental sampling was conducted at a maximum of two kilometre intervals along the centre line of the proposed pipeline routes. In total, eighteen stations were investigated with a digital stills and video system, prior to sampling with a day grab. Further environmental site surveys will be carried out in the Cawdor area when the drilling locations are determined and will be carried out a later date, the results of these will be incorporated into the relevant PON15Bs. 3.1. METOCEAN CONDITIONS In order to design and operate offshore installations in a safe and efficient manner it is essential that a good knowledge is available of the metocean (meteorological and oceanographic) conditions to which the installation may be exposed. Sediment type, currents, tides and circulation patterns all influence the type and distribution of marine life in an area. Metocean conditions also influence the behaviour of emissions and discharges (including spills) from offshore facilities. For example, the speed and direction of water currents have a direct effect on the transport, dispersion and ultimate fate of any discharges from an installation while sediment type can influence the levels of contaminants that may be retained in an area.
