The world of business is an adventure, and our bachelor of
business administration equips you to be bold, creative and
IT’S MULTI-FACETED
Business exists at the intersection of many fields – marketing, human
resources, accounting, finance and others. Our BBA builds a foundation
in all the essentials, and lets you concentrate on one of two growing
areas of interest: contemporary business studies or small business and
entrepreneurship.
IT’S PRACTICAL
Working in business requires a set of practical skills that can make or
break your company, pitch or product. We hone the fundamentals – critical
thinking, research and analysis, strong written and verbal skills – to make
sure you stand out from the pack.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You could join the national award-winning Students in Free Enterprise
(SIFE Grenfell) as well as the Grenfell Business Society. And if you’re a
Advising Centre equips you with tools and advice to help bring your
venture to life.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
You can apply for admission directly from high school. If you have attended
another post-secondary institution, you can apply for advanced standing.
You should meet with an academic adviser to discuss transfer credits and
EDUCATION
BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B.Ed.)
Every child is unique. They have unique personalities and talents.
Unique hopes and dreams. Unique passions and struggles. And
sometimes, the only way to really teach them is to learn about
them – and from them – first.
True educators are lifelong learners, so at Grenfell you’re encouraged
to keep your mind open to new people, ideas and perspectives.
IT’S COMPLEX
Crafting a lesson plan. Leading a class. Keeping your students inspired
and active. Every aspect of teaching is intricate. Our program will
get you ready to face the daily adventures with innovative classroom
practices and up-to-date knowledge of child development theory,
teaching and learning.
IT’S INTENSIVE
In just 16 months, you will be prepared to teach kindergarten to Grade 6.
The program can be completed in four consecutive semesters, including
a teaching internship in the winter semester.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll be taught by instructors with K-12 teaching experience. You’ll
learn about child development, diverse learners and much more. By the
time you finish, you’ll be ready to step into a fulfilling career teaching
children and changing lives.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
To apply for this program, you must have completed 78 credit hours in
specific prerequisite courses. Starting with admission for May 2014, an
ENGLISH
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
Literature connects us. Whether through a play by Shakespeare,
poem by Newfoundland writer Al Pittman or novel by Margaret
Atwood, people from different backgrounds and eras find common
ground in their love of literature.
Our English program gives you the tools to engage, analyze and
appreciate great works both new and old, Canadian and international.
IT’S CRITICAL
Finding new layers of meaning. Identifying patterns. Getting inside
the head of an author. Understanding how politics and psychology
shape a work of literature. All of these come from thinking critically
and creatively – abilities we teach you from day one.
IT’S CULTURAL
You’ll explore other cultures through English, and be part of one
here in Corner Brook. The internationally renowned March Hare
literary festival brings together a vibrant community of artists,
poets and writers. And The April Rabbit is an exciting evening
of local emerging talent. You can also publish in Paper Mill,
the creative writing society’s journal.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll study classic writers and graphic novels, children’s literature
and modern poets. You’ll sharpen your writing skills and critical
faculties. You’ll pick an area of concentration in modern literature,
dramatic literature, Canadian literature – or take a combination of all
three. You’ll be ready to pursue careers in journalism, public relations,
advertising, education and tourism promotion – and English is a
favoured first degree for many careers, such as law and medicine.
ENVIRONMENTAL
SCIENCE
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE [B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Hons.)]
From lush rainforest to barren tundra, the natural world is rich
with complexity and beauty. It awes us when we step back, and
intrigues us when we take a closer look.
At Grenfell we’re surrounded by wetlands, boreal forest, river
systems and Subarctic tundra, so you have frequent opportunities
to move beyond the textbook and into the field.
IT’S ADVENTUROUS
We believe true understanding comes from equal doses of analysis and
experience. That’s why we spend time out in the natural world, at places
like the Bonne Bay Marine Station in Gros Morne National Park. You might
even study climate change in the Arctic, or marine environments in Belize.
IT’S DIVERSE
Whether you specialize in biology or chemistry, you’ll find your degree will
expose you to many areas of research. You might want to understand the
impact of chemical pesticides or atmospheric pollutants, or focus on the
ecology of organisms in freshwater and terrestrial environments. Whatever
you choose, you’ll see that our multi-disciplinary program allows you to
explore the science in applied and analytical contexts, priming you for
success in a global industry.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll be taught by experts like Dr. Geoff Rayner-Canham, winner of
the national 3M Teaching Award and National Science and Engineering
Research Council of Canada Award for science promotion. And when
you graduate, you could work as an environmental laboratory technologist
or field scientist, or continue your studies in fields like environmental
law or conservation.
STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
The planet needs champions. It needs passionate, informed
advocates. It needs leaders who can balance the needs of
industries with those of conservationists and the public.
In other words, it needs environmental studies students. Our
program will equip you to steward the planet using a strong
grounding in ethics, economics and environment.
IT’S URGENT
Our relationship to the planet needs to change. If we continue to use our
resources as we have, we’ll soon be without them. Finding a way forward
takes deep understanding and bold creativity, so we’re nurturing those
talents in our students – the next policy makers, resource managers,
activists, adventure tourism operators and journalists.
IT’S OUTDOORS
You’ll take courses in environmental perspectives and outdoor environmental
pursuits. They’ll take you outdoors into the rivers, mountains and bays that
make the area surrounding Grenfell so breathtaking.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll kayak, ski and go orienteering. You’ll have the chance to help out
with Grenfell’s industrial-scale composter, the carbon footprint project or
our community garden. And most importantly, you’ll be ready to begin a
career that respects and champions our precious, fragile planet.
GENERAL
SCIENCE
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE [B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Hons.)]
What keeps the universe expanding? What are the origins of
life on Earth? How does bare rock become a thriving forest?
If you’re the kind of person who asks big questions, our general
science degree is made for you. We’re the only program in Canada
that allows you to study three scientific concentrations at once, not
just a major and minor.
IT’S APPLICABLE
The skills you develop here will serve you everywhere. Science cultivates
analytical tools that help you to think critically and solve problems. So
whether you’ve got a career in mind or are exploring your possibilities,
you’ll find that a science degree opens doors for many future
paths – from science teacher to lawyer, doctor to journalist.
IT’S ABSORBING
Studying science at Grenfell is exciting and multi-faceted. You’ll be
dissecting frogs, gazing through our state-of-the-art telescope or
tracking rare species through Gros Morne National Park.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll learn cutting-edge science. You’ll research, report and engage.
You’ll choose three disciplines out of five options: biology, chemistry,
earth systems, mathematics and physics. You’ll also have the option to
take an honours degree and answer those deep questions with even
deeper answers.
STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
Why are wars fought over religion, politics and trade? What brings
about key diplomatic decisions and international treaties? What was
it like when European powers first encountered native peoples?
History is more than books gathering dust. It’s the living, breathing
story of humankind – of processes and societies, philosophies and
conflicts. By understanding how things were, you’ll better understand
the contemporary world.
IT’S ILLUMINATING
Studying history won’t just equip you with facts and figures; it’ll give
you a broader perspective on why things happened the way they did.
You’ll learn to tease out the dynamics that shape each event, society
and era. It’s an approach that not only teaches, but illuminates.
IT’S CHALLENGING
Understanding the past requires deep research and constant critical
engagement. Toward the end of your degree you’ll be fully equipped
to tackle courses with self-directed research components, something
normally reserved for honours programs.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll probe for the truth and find new perspectives. You’ll discuss the
facts and debate the issues. You’ll have access to thousands of journals,
books and databases through our vast library holdings, including our
rare book collection. You might even be hired as a research assistant
full time during the summer, or part time through the year.
HUMANITIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
We think critically. We ask big questions and look for
connections. We study ideas and challenge conventions.
And when freedom is threatened, we defend it.
In humanities we believe education is the key to citizenship.
So whether you pursue a career in journalism, academia or
government, we prepare you to do it with integrity and leadership.
IT’S VERSATILE
Imagine comparing Arcade Fire to Carl Jung, or Watchmen to
Homer’s Iliad. And who would have thought Family Guy had
anything to do with philosophy? We explore core texts from many
angles, teasing out new insights and forming new perspectives.
IT’S GUTSY
Asking big questions. Debating tough topics. Drawing unusual
parallels between thinkers and ideas. It takes guts to break
convention, and humanities is all about taking risks, seeing
beyond the status quo and taking an active role in society.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll develop discipline. You’ll explore the clash of values in the
contemporary world. You’ll graduate with skills prized by business,
government and media. In other words, you’ll be ready to think
and act like a global citizen.
PSYCHOLOGY
BACHELOR OF ARTS [BA or BA(Hons.)]
BACHELOR OF SCIENCE [B.Sc. or B.Sc.(Hons.)]
Do primates think like we do? How much influence does
the unconscious have on human behaviour? Which is more
powerful, nature or nurture?
People have wondered how to answer these questions for
centuries. At Grenfell, we delve into our complex psyches
to uncover the patterns and realities that make us tick.
IT’S UNEXPECTED
In psychology we research some of the most unusual phenomena
in the world, from the structure and function of the brain to the
mysteries of abnormal personalities. We even take a look at lost,
recovered and false memories. It’s a journey filled with surprising
twists and turns, ending with answers that often run counter to
intuition and experience.
IT’S APPLICABLE
Psychology builds a skillset that will serve you wherever you go in
life. High-level conceptual thinking, rigorous problem-solving and
strong analytical capabilities are just some of the talents you’ll
develop by studying psychology at Grenfell.
STUDIES
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA)
It’s invisible and everywhere. It shapes us while we shape it.
It’s stitched into an embroidered garment and woven through
a crowded indie rock show. We’re talking about culture, one of
the great shapers of meaning in human life.
At Grenfell we use anthropology, folklore and sociology to answer the
questions of why we do what we do, both as individuals and societies.
IT’S FASCINATING
Social/cultural studies encompasses a vast set of approaches,
methods and academic perspectives. This variety makes studying
The population is growing, our climate is changing and
demands on resources are increasing year after year. We need
wise leaders to steward our precious planet into the future.
management – using our resources to meet human needs, now and
IT’S UNIQUE
Sustainable resource management brings together natural resource
science, economics, policy development and ethics. This unique
combination prepares you for an engaging and relevant career in
such areas as public service, private industry, policy development
and environmental science.
IT’S VARIED
Your course load will span everything from oil and gas studies
to biodiversity, so you’ll be capable of thinking about resource
management from many different perspectives. And Grenfell is
located in an ideal place to study resource management. The
surrounding area is rich with minerals, thick with forest, and
dotted with several national parks and ecological reserves.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll be guided by expert faculty and hear presentations from guest
THEATRE
BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS (BFA)
Months of rehearsal and set building. Months of working
scenes and memorizing lines. Months of calming nerves and
preparation. Then the house lights go down, the crowd perks
up and the show begins.
Theatre turns hard work into bold, powerful expression. Our
well-rounded program is building the next generation of theatre
professionals: the people who bring the stage to life with acting
chops and evocative stagecraft.
IT’S COURAGEOUS
“Our production classes
operated like a professional
theatre, and when I graduated,
I felt more than equipped to
compete for employment
with actors across Canada.”
Rick Simm, BFA
Taking a script from page to stage involves more than memorizing lines or
sewing a convincing costume. It takes a team of committed, courageous people
to step out of their comfort zones and breathe life into the characters and sets.
IT’S TECHNICAL
Mastery in acting or stagecraft takes commitment, practice and experienced
instruction. Our faculty and staff will walk alongside you for the whole
program, pushing your boundaries, honing your craft, and preparing
you for full-scale productions.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
Graduates from our program have been on Gemini-nominated TV shows,
worked at Cirque du Soleil, performed at Stratford and been members
of professional theatre companies locally, nationally and abroad. You’ll see
audiences’ faces light up through the power of a well-timed line or crucial set
change. You’ll even spend part of a semester in Harlow, England, studying
under British theatre professionals and taking in some of the best theatre
that London has to offer.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Enrolment in the theatre program is limited and the selection is competitive.
Submit your theatre application by March 31, in addition to your general
university admissions application. Depending on your specialization, you’ll
be required to audition (for acting) or have an interview (for stagecraft).
VISUAL ARTS
BACHELOR OF FINE ARTS (BFA)
Making art is about finding your voice. It’s about
reacting to the world, to its joys and challenges,
by making things – paintings, sculptures, prints and
videos. It’s about conversation, debate and insight.
At Grenfell we’re surrounded by inspiring landscapes
and brilliant artists, so whatever your medium, we
provide a place for you to explore, develop and blossom.
IT’S BALANCED
Our program has launched many successful careers in art and art history by
balancing the fundamentals of making art with the ideas and emotions that give
it power. And you’ll have a wealth of faculty, staff and visiting artists to mentor
you on your journey.
IT’S ACTIVE
From year one you’ll be making art, learning its history, and cultivating your own
perspectives. By year four you’ll be ready to develop your own independent body
of work, and discuss your work one-on-one with your faculty adviser, auxiliary advisers
and visiting artists. Throughout your time here you’ll take courses in drawing,
painting, sculpture, digital imaging, art history, printmaking and photography.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll learn from faculty who are practicing artists and pursuing active scholarly
projects. You’ll show your work in the Grenfell Art Gallery, a regular venue for
national and international shows. You could also spend nine weeks on an art
history study tour at Memorial University’s campus in Harlow, England. While
you’re there you’ll make industry contacts, take frequent trips to London
and visit cultural sites like Stonehenge.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Submissions should reflect involvement, curiosity and passion for the visual arts. We
look for hardworking and creative people who take pride in their work. Enrolment is
limited and selection competitive, so your application must be submitted by March 1
(in addition to your general university admissions application).
ENVIRONMENTAL
POLICY
MASTER OF ARTS (MA)
Changing the world takes more than just a vision for
the future. It takes a rich knowledge of how things work
today – in institutions, governments and around the world.
Our master’s program prepares you to be a bridge that
connects problems with solutions, people with purposes
and our present with the future.
IT’S UNIFYING
Our program brings together Grenfell’s strengths in environmental studies,
environmental science and sustainable resource management. By integrating
these diverse fields of study, we’re training policy leaders to make a difference
provincially, nationally and all over the world.
IT’S RIGOROUS
Designing an environmentally healthy future requires sound thinking in fields as
diverse as public policy, political science, geography, economics, biology and
forestry. Our expert faculty, excellent library resources and hands-on orientation
will deepen your understanding of the issues and broaden your set of tools.
WHAT YOU’LL GET
You’ll get to choose between a thesis-based program, which takes two years,
and a research paper-based program, which takes one. Both options will
place you in an internship that exposes you to the challenges of real-world
practitioners in a government office, non-governmental organization,
community organization or business.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
Admission is limited and competitive. To be considered for admission, applicants
should have an undergraduate degree. In special cases applicants without an
undergraduate degree may be considered for admission based on professional
experience. Applicants will be assessed for admission to the MA in environmental
policy based on their interests, their potential to produce meaningful research
and the availability of supervisors in the area of the applicant’s interest. Deadline:
Feb. 15 for fall semester, Aug. 15 for winter semester.
