2.4.3 Channelling <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ion</strong>s<br />

As ment<strong>ion</strong>ed previously in relat<strong>ion</strong> to the inelastic <strong>energy</strong> loss, in a crystal there<br />

are large open channels (25). If implantat<strong>ion</strong> is carried out along an axis it can be<br />

possible for a small fract<strong>ion</strong> <strong>of</strong> the <strong>ion</strong>s to be channelled to considerably greater depths.<br />

Screening prevents large angle scattering. For <strong>ion</strong> implantat<strong>ion</strong> this is undesirable as<br />

shal<strong>low</strong> junct<strong>ion</strong>s are required. Often pre-amorphisat<strong>ion</strong> or implantat<strong>ion</strong> <strong>of</strong>f axis is<br />

carried out to avoid channelling. Channelling is exploited in the MEIS analysis<br />

technique to study damaged layers <strong>and</strong> this is described in sect<strong>ion</strong> 4.2.1.6.<br />
