After the second implant was mounted by means of the two screws, the implants were<br />

coupled by means of the Nitinol staple, which was previously cooled <strong>to</strong> -20 0C in a NaCl<br />

liquid solution kept in a refrigera<strong>to</strong>r. By cooling, the staple is opened and driven in<strong>to</strong> each of<br />

the two mounted modules. As the staple warms (possibly just upon heating <strong>to</strong> body<br />

temperature) the pins return <strong>to</strong> their original shape, pulling the fracture <strong>to</strong>gether,<br />

determining the translation of the modules and the separated parts of bone are compressed,<br />

reducing the risks of wrong orientation or additional bones callus. Main stages of the<br />

surgical experiment on the humerus bone of a cadaver are presented in Fig.46.<br />
