28 February MMRC Luncheon
The February MMRC luncheon was held at the Santa
Maria Inn in Santa Maria. There were 28 members and
guests in attendance. As usual, it is always great to see
familiar faces, and long-time friends chatting and
casually exchanging greetings over a bite to eat. The
50-50 winner of $20 was Charlie Radaz.
Our guest speaker was Mr. Jeff Allen, Production Mgr. ,
re; Allan Hancock's PCPA behind-the-scenes efforts to
bring high caliber plays & musicals to our communities
of Santa Maria and Solvang (outdoor theatre). He went
into extensive, detailed discussion on all the stage sets,
costumes, technical equipment and design of all it takes
to bring quality performances to all that attend. This
includes real-time coordination to maintain the sound
systems, lighting, smoke & fire sensor equipment
designed to accommodate the various stage
pyrotechnics, smoke and other techniques to enhance
the play's effectiveness.
Accompanying Jeff, was Ms. Gillian Cole-Andrews, Exec.
Dir. PCPA Foundation.
In addition to all the other tasks they work on, Jeff said
the biggest reward is the amount of hands-on
education in the field they give to each full-time and
part-time AHC students that work for and with them.
As I've aged - I've become kinder to, and less critical of,
myself. I've become my own friend.
I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too
soon; before they understood the great freedom that
comes with aging.
Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play on the
computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance
with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50s, 60s &
70s, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a lost
love, I will.
I will walk the beach, in a swim suit that is stretched over
a bulging body, and will dive into the waves, with
abandon, if I choose to, despite the pitying glances
February 2013
I know I am sometimes forgetful. But there again, some of
life is just as well forgotten. And, eventually, I remember
the important things.
Sure, over the years, my heart has been broken. How can
your heart not break, when you lose a loved one, or when
a child suffers, or even when somebody's beloved pet gets
hit by a car? But broken hearts are what give us strength,
and understanding, and compassion. A heart never
broken, is pristine, and sterile, and will never know the joy
of being imperfect.
I am so blessed to have lived long enough to have my hair
turning gray, and to have my youthful laughs be forever
etched into deep grooves on my face. So many have never
laughed, and so many have died before their hair could
turn silver.
As you get older, it is easier to be positive. You care less
about what other people think. I don't question myself
anymore. I've even earned the right to be wrong.
So, to answer your question, I like being old. It has set me
free. I like the person I have become. I am not going to
live forever, but while I am still here, I will not waste time
lamenting what could have been, or worrying about what
will be. And I shall eat dessert every single day (if I feel like
it).
May our friendship never come apart,
especially when it's straight from the heart.
Mr. Irv Richards, Ret., Martin Marietta Corp, VLO
passed away on 22 January. From the Board and
Members, our condolences to his family. Irv will be
missed by all who knew and worked with him.
On a personal note; annually we lose friends and associates we knew at VAFB. Their memories of their
participation, contribution or just times spent with us, is forever lost. What we individually and collectively went
through to make the launches and advances was an amazing accomplishment. It would truly be a great thing for you
to take this opportunity to put pen to paper and add your story(ies) to the Company's 'Share Your Story'. Don
Each February, the Club dues ($15) from active members are due for payment. Although most have made their
payments, a few remain unpaid. We are all busy these days, and sometimes we forget about simple things. So, if
you haven't yet made your payment, please forward your check for dues payment to Aubrey Collins.
Note; each month the Club has to guarantee a specific number of lunches (sometimes a minimum set by the
restaurant) a week in advance of the Club's meeting. If we don't meet the minimum number of attendees, the Club
pays the difference. And, if one or more of our members orders a meal & does not make the luncheon, the Club pays
the restaurant for the price of each meal. So, we're reminding our membership to notify Aubrey no later than five (5)
days in advance of the event you plan on attending & your meal choice. This will save Aubrey the effort and time
needed to call our 'regulars' to see if they will make the luncheon so he can meet our minimum, and/or to have those
who've ordered a meal, to remind them to mail in their check.
Aubrey does a lot for the Club, and the extra time and effort needed to meet the minimum quota, or to get meal preevent
orders and payments from our Members, places an undue pressure on him.
