Out and
about
My priority over
the last couple of
months has been
to visit as many
of our new sites
in North
Yorkshire as
possible and to
welcome staff
from Harrogate,
Hambleton and Richmondshire to the
trust. I’ve really enjoyed meeting
everyone and I am looking forward
to spending more time in this area in
the future.
I was also really pleased to be invited by
Darlington Mind to attend the official
opening of their new housing project by
HRH Prince Edward, Duke of Wessex.
One of our non-executive directors,
Andrew Lombard, went with me to the
launch of the supported living project,
which has recently undergone a major
refurbishment programme.
Another highlight for me was hosting a
visit by the chairman of North Yorkshire
and York Primary Care Trust, Kevin
McAleese, to our new development at
Cross Lane Hospital in Scarborough.
Kevin was very impressed with the new
unit for older people which is due to
open in the summer. It really is a fantastic
facility which is going to provide vastly
improved accommodation for patients
and staff. I would like to congratulate
everyone who has been involved in its
design.
New facilities and improved
accommodation have been a recurring
theme over recent weeks. I visited the
short break service for children with
learning disabilities, which has moved
from Seaham to Holly Unit at West Park
Hospital in Darlington. The facilities at
Seaham were far from ideal for the
complex needs of these young people
and I’m delighted that they can now
spend time in a modern, spacious unit.
I was also given a sneak preview of our
new centre for eating disorders at West
Park Hospital. You can read more about
this excellent new service on page four.
Quality improvements
get thumbs up
The trust’s quality improvement
system has been singled out for
praise by the Department of
Health’s clinical quality and
productivity lead.
Sir John Oldham, a GP and expert
member of the National Quality Board,
paid tribute to the work that the trust
has done to improve the quality of our
services. He visited hospital sites in
Darlington and Durham to witness the
achievements first hand.
The trust’s quality improvement system
is based on a model developed by
Toyota and adapted for healthcare
settings by the Virginia Mason Medical
Centre in Seattle.
Patients at Ridgeway in Roseberry
Park, Middlesbrough have been
working hard to develop the library
there.
The patient library provides
recreation, therapeutic intervention
and formal and informal learning
opportunities for the forensic mental
health and learning disability patients
on the unit.
A partnership with Middlesbrough
Libraries has provided many of the
books and multi-media discs, as well
as professional support and a direct
link to their database. The library
benefits from the use of innovative
E-readers, and internet hubs will also
shortly be available.
Patient librarians have completed a
training programme in the procedures
and systems for running the library.
Speaking while at West Park Hospital in
Darlington Sir John said: “The visit has
been inspiring. I know of no other
organisation in the UK or Europe that is
so comprehensively implementing
kaizen (continuous improvement) in a
healthcare setting, to the obvious
benefit of patients, staff and users of
resources. The whole of the NHS needs
to follow where this trust has led.”
Dr Ruth Briel, clinical director, said:
“One of the most important elements
of our quality improvement system is
that it empowers staff to make changes.
It gives them the tools to help identify
and remove waste, streamline processes
and redesign services to add value for
our service users.”
Patient library books in
for a revamp
Ridgeway library is
proving popular
This supports their vocational
rehabilitation pathway. Some patient
librarians will be developing their
skills in literacy, language,
communication, numeracy and IT,
which will be embedded into their
role and help them to work towards
national qualifications.

New centre for eating disorders
Our new, regional inpatient service for
adults with eating disorders has opened
in Darlington.
Part of The Northern Centre for Eating
Disorders, Birch at West Park Hospital was
specially designed with the help of service
users and carers.
Birch has 17 beds, including two high
dependency beds, and provides highly
specialised care for women and men from
across the North East and North Cumbria
with illnesses such as anorexia and some
forms of bulimia.
All of the single, en-suite bedrooms have
access to two garden areas and each room
has its own entertainment system with a TV,
DVD and CD player. To help people keep in
touch with family and friends there are also
computers with wireless internet access and
internet phone software.
A specialist team led by a consultant
psychiatrist and including physicians, nurses,
The memory service in Northallerton
has received national accreditation
from the Royal College of
Psychiatrists.
The service, led by consultant Dr Austin
Roberts and memory nurse Maggie
Layfield, is based at The Friarage
Hospital and provides assessment,
diagnosis and ongoing treatment and
support for service users, and their
carers, who present with memory
impairment.
dieticians and therapists work closely
together to make sure patients get support
and treatment for both their physical and
mental health needs.
A dedicated chef and kitchen facilities
where patients can plan and prepare food
are also key elements of the service.
Dr Melanie Temple, consultant psychiatrist
and lead for the unit, said “Recovering from
an eating disorder is not just a matter of
gaining weight but also dealing with
experiences which have caused
preoccupation with food and body image.
There is no simple fix, but our aim is to give
people the help they need to reach a point
in their lives when they no longer need
hospital care and have a stable eating
pattern”.
Kate, one of the patients on Birch said the
new unit was “fantastic”. She added “It’s a
really positive place with lots of different
therapies and activities available, which can
be tailored for each individual’s needs.
Excellent memory services
It was rated as excellent through the
Memory Services National Accreditation
Scheme. This scheme, developed by
the Royal College of Psychiatrists,
works to assure and improve the quality
of memory services for people with
memory problems or dementia and
their carers.
Accreditation involves a comprehensive
process of self and peer review, over
six to nine months, through which good
practice and high quality care are
I really feel as if I’m going to get the support
that’s right for me.”
The children’s eating disorders inpatient
service, The Evergreen Centre, will open in
Middlesbrough in the summer.
consultant Melanie Temple
recognised. Services are also supported
to identify and address areas for
improvement. The process of
accreditation is ongoing and the service
is subject to regular reviews to ensure
that standards have been maintained
and that areas highlighted for
improvement have been addressed.
Service users and carers with first hand
experience of using memory services
are encouraged to get involved in all
stages of the accreditation process.

Five star
services
Staff celebrate
their five stars
Mental health services for older people
across County Durham and Darlington
have been awarded five stars in the
Excellence in Practice Scheme (EPAS) by
the University of Teesside. EPAS allows
healthcare services to formally
demonstrate how they are providing
high quality care, and five stars is the
highest accreditation.
The teams have been recognised for using
excellent leadership, team working and
partnerships to provide an innovative, patientled
service. They were judged against six
areas including collaborative working, user
focused care, performance management and
continuous quality improvement. During the
assessment, accreditors spoke to service
users, carers, volunteers and GPs.
Using the EPAS process a number of new
initiatives have been introduced, including
setting up a local service user and carer
involvement group and using electronic visual
control boards to manage patient care on
wards and in the community.
Day treatment services have also been
improved. Dedicated staff now assess patients
in their own homes and outpatient clinics,
and refer them to relevant therapeutic groups
including relaxation, health and wellbeing,
depression management and memory
management.
Wii Fit is fit for all
The trust’s Teesside young onset
dementia team has been turning to
technology to help patients.
They’ve been trialling the use of a
Nintendo Wii Fit with service users in
Hartlepool, to promote physical exercise
and wellbeing and using technology in a
fun way.
Seven service users aged between 50 and
70 took part in the eight week trial at
Hartlepool Alzheimer’s Society’s day club.
While there is evidence that using a Wii
Fit can improve enthusiasm, physical and
cognitive abilities, strength, co-ordination,
concentration, memory and social
An insight into...
Debra Wood
Community nursery nurse
Child and adolescent mental health
services, Wessex House, Stockton on
Tees. Debra is also a Bridges to Learning
project worker and Union Learning
representative.
What is the best thing about your job?
As a nursery nurse in child and adolescent
mental health services, I find my job
rewarding and challenging. I really enjoy
working with the children and their
families.
As a Bridges to Learning project worker I
enjoy meeting staff, working alongside
the trust’s workforce development team at
Flatts Lane Centre in Middlesbrough and
travelling to different sites across the trust,
offering advice and support to staff.
interaction, there is no current research
evaluating its use with people with
dementia.
The group played bowling, boxing and go
karting on the Wii Fit. At the end of the
sessions people were more relaxed,
showed humour, were alert and chatted
more, with fewer signs of anxiety and
tension. Participants said they felt it had
been a fun group activity and had been
invigorating.
The team is now considering how to
make more use of the Wii Fit in dementia
services across the trust.
Whose picture did you have pinned on
your wall as a teenager?
Donny Osmond and David Cassidy.
What was the last film you saw?
The last film I saw was an independent
American film called Blue Valentine. I also
enjoy the classic movies from the Golden
Era.
What was the last book you read?
A Thousand Splendid Suns by Afghan
author Khaled Hosseini.
What has been your proudest moment
to date?
I am immensely proud of both of my
children, but I was particularly moved at
my son’s passing out parade in Plymouth,
following his Royal Navy training.
Where did you spend your last
holiday?
The Greek Islands, but my favourite
destination by far is Rome. I love the
atmosphere, the architecture, and of
course the Italian cuisine.
What was your first job?
I worked as a Saturday girl in Stockton
Littlewoods on the fruit counter. I had so
much fun!
What is your main ambition in life?
I don’t really have a master plan. I’m easy
going and I like to be surprised. Who
knows what the future holds…
How do you spend your leisure time?
I enjoy travelling, relaxing, socialising and
good food.
How would your friends and
colleagues describe you?
Bubbly, energetic, enthusiastic and
positive, with a cheeky personality.
Dementia is a progressive, chronic
condition that involves a severe decline in
a person's ability to think, remember and
Focal point
Focal point profiles topics that
affect the trust, written by
members of staff.
If you have a subject you feel
will be of interest to your
colleagues we would be
pleased to hear from you.
Good health is essential for
achieving independence, choice and
inclusion. However, people with
learning disabilities often have
poorer general health and can find
it difficult to access services for
health problems unrelated to their
disability. ‘Health action planning’
was originally introduced in the
Government’s 2001 White Paper,
‘Valuing People’ to maintain and
improve the health of people with a
learning disability. It’s supported by
wider changes to help link
individuals with the range of
services and support they need to
stay healthy. This is known as
‘health facilitation’.
Our health facilitation teams were
created following recommendations
from ‘Valuing People’ and are
committed to implementing the key
actions for health for all learning
disabled adults, as well as children who
are moving into adult services.
There are two health facilitation teams
in the trust; one for Durham and
Darlington and one for Teesside. Both
teams accept referrals from all
professionals, agencies, carers and
relatives and also proactively work to
identify people with learning disabilities
and offer our services to them. This is
done through promotional events, work
with GP practices, liaison with care
providers, day services, colleges, carers
groups and self advocacy services.
We work closely with local Learning
Disability Partnership Boards and their
health sub groups to develop and
implement action plans arising from the
‘annual health self assessment’.
However, much of the team’s work
focuses on four main areas: ensuring
people have meaningful person-centred
health action plans, improving access to
primary care, improving access to acute
care and delivery and signposting to
health promotional interventions.
Health action planning
People are offered comprehensive
health assessments, from which an easy
to understand action plan is developed.
These plans can help people to
understand and take control over their
health, help others to understand the
support an individual needs, give links
to services and provide education and
choice. Health action planning training
and support is also offered to care
providers, families and other health
professionals in both community and
inpatient services.
Primary care
Our health facilitation teams have
worked closely with primary care trusts
to make sure GP practices have
completed annual health checks for
people with a leaning disability. This has
included providing training sessions for
doctors, nurses and administration
staff, checking practice registers are
accurate and sharing information and
resources that can improve access to
The health facilitation team
Health facilitation team
primary care. In South Tees a dedicated
role has been developed to support
local GP practices.
Acute care
We have strong links with all our local
acute hospital trusts. Our Durham and
Darlington team have an acute liaison
nurse in the team, who works closely
with hospitals. All hospitals have action
plans to improve their care for people
with learning disabilities and our health
facilitation teams work to support
these.
Health promotion
Individual and group work is
undertaken in a variety of settings to
teach people with learning disabilities
about different health topics. Local and
regional work has also been carried out
to develop information in an accessible
Bringing the
past to life
33 service users, carers and staff from
Stockton’s integrated mental health service
for older people visited Beamish open air
museum in May. The team is working
closely with Beamish in County Durham to
provide opportunities for service users with
dementia to reflect on and exchange
memories from the past with others in an
informative and enjoyable way. This
stimulates communication and promotes
confidence. Beamish Museum outreach
workers have delivered reminiscence
sessions to staff, service users and carers,
and will also be involved with the service’s
Dementia Awareness Week activities in
Stockton in July.
Excellent
electroconvulsive
therapy
The Ryedale electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) suite at
accredited as ‘excellent’ by the Royal College of
Psychiatrists’ ECT Accreditation Service (ECTAS).
ECTAS recognises good practice and high quality
care. The 'excellent' accreditation means we have
met all required standards and also excelled in
some areas.
