Accumulations of grease, for example, wiil! slow down and some- •times block the passage of waste waiter. • Plugged or sluggish drains can often be freed by .simply using a plunger or force cup. In sonie cases, however, it may be necessary !to employ other methods such as chemicals or mechanical devices. Lye, the chemical generally used to clean out grease sediiment and other obstructions in clogged drains, should be used only when proper precautions are taken. If a lye solution comes into contact wiith the body, especially the eyes, senious injury can result. Since the ^ chemical is a caustic substance, cloithes should also be protected against splashing. However, when instructions for their use are followed oarefuHy, lye and otlier chemicals are both safe and effective for cleaning out clogged drains, espeoially in the case of an accumulia'fcion of grease. When more persistent obstructions are met the chemical flushing compounds prove ineffective, 'it may be necessary to use a "snake." Tliis is a wire coil spring auger which can reach a considerable distance down the drainpipe, chewing away at the obstruc- 'tion by means of a metal bit attiached to the shaft. Some types are operated by hand, otliers by means of a motor. Although these (types are used mainly by plumbers, simple, inexpensive "snakes" suitable for homeowners, are available. A newer method of opening clogged di^ns involves the use of an explosive charge or "gun." Like the motor driven "snake," •this device is used mostly by plumbers who are familiar wiith its operation. Its mechanism and operation is simple and repairs can often be made by the homeowner himself. With family living extending to tlie property line, the fence has now become another wall of the house and as such has taken on new patterns and new ways of construction to fit its new prominence. The six-foot fence is often an absolute necessity to a house whose interior merges with the garden and is ovei'looked by other houses or traffic. But in screening for privacy, landscape architects explain that it is seldom necessaiy to provide continuous screening. Noisy traffic can make a garden unpleasant unless it is muffled in .some way.- Homeowners whose property adjoins busy traffic lanes have found that by using abundant evergreen planting against high fencing, noise has been reduced. One homeowner has added the pleasaint patter of water to further veil the noise. This was done with several little waterfalls dropping into little pools. VARIEXr IN FENCES There is great variety in fencing styles from which to choose, but they should be related to the design of the house, and landscape, architects say. The homeowner can choose a solid fence made of cedar boards, plywood sheets, fibreglass or asbestos board panels. Again it can be a barrier made of woven plywood or fibreglass strips. Split cedar saplings nailed to either side of 2 .X 4s will make a fence attractive back and fi'ont. As a shelter to control wind, ther'g's the moveable cedar louver type fence. Since fence building is not a difficult job, many homeowners build their- own successfully. The biggest problem is the post setting. Once the posts are in place the 'rest is easy. However, experts point out that .stonework requires genuine craftsmanship and poured concrete takes equipment and elaborate forming and staging. The inibber baU in the outlet valve may not be making water-tight contact against the valve seat, or there may be some foreign matter adhering to the ball. Removing the sediment from the ball or seat is often aU that is needed to ensure proper closing; of the valve. But if the ball is losing its resiliency or if the rubber is cracked or disintegrating, it will have to be replaced. Anotlier comon failure which causes the outlet valve to leak is HEART DISEASE a bent or stick lift wire. This wiU prevent the ball from faUing all the way down or from sitting squarely on the valve openir^. Straightening the wire or rotating the guide arm through which the wire is threaded will usually correct this condition. The tank will have to be emptied and liie intake valve closed during this operation. Water can be prevented from entering the tank by maintaining the float in the "up" position. If the trouble is with the intake valve, the float may be binding against the walls of the tank, or the float itself may be leaking or waterlogged. Binding can be corrected by bending the float arm and freeing the float. However, if the float is punctured or is no longer serviceable it will have to' be replaced. When tile water continually spills into the overflow pipe a worn-out washer in the intake valve may be suspected. To make the repair the main shutoff valve on tlie water supply 'line will have to be closed. The washer can be reached by removing the scro\\"s that hold down the plunger. The ring cap which holds tlie washer jiiay also have to be replaced if it is defective. A I R - C O N D I T I O N I N G A I D S PATIENTS WITH heart disease who must be hospjifcalized in hot weather are greatly helped by air conditioning of their rooms, according to a report from the American Medical Associatiion received by the Heallth League of Canada. Two physicians, Drs. George E. Burch and Niohoilas DePasquale said that heart patients are helped because air conditioning elimina'tes sweating, w'hich causes the cardiovascular system to work harder than usual. Thus, it prevents additional strain on an already damaged heart. They said that air-conditioning of hospi'tal rooms is also especially helpful to patients witli chronic illnesses and with broncliial asthma. The doctors pointed out that airconditioning as ah adjunct to regular treatment "has not received the emphasis in medical literature that it deserves." E V E R Y T H I N G F O R T H E R U I L D E R They compared two groups of patients treaited at charily hospital, New Orleans, in air condi'tioned and non-air-conditioned wards. They found that air-condibioning benefits most patierits, although a few could ndt stand it at ail. They complained of the cold and of having "stuffy" noses. The air-condiitioning was beneficial to patients mainly because they slept more soundly, longer and more restfully. Patients who were short of breath found it easier to brcalthe, fchus relieving anxielty and apprehension.
