Poetry – First Place Seen through a Lens Ariana Rain McCaughey The more I fall in love with it The more I become lost With each snap of the shutter I fall deeper under its spell With each perfect timeless moment I capture I become trapped in an insane sort of love A love only seen through a photographer’s lens Each smile, each burst of laughter, each pondering moment Sends ecstasy soaring though my veins I can’t stop myself It’s like a drug that is constantly flowing through my system There is no known cure for this kind of disease There are no patches or special gums There is no “real” treatment Only things we can do to lessen the urges Which is strange, but the answer is to do it more often As much as you can It haunts me every day and sometimes into the night Driving down the familiar roads Places I have seen since the day I was born But now as I look upon them They are different So much more different I start to notice things that weren’t there before It’s the new way I see the world now Through a lens Noticing every minute detail about each location Thinking of the amazing things that could happen there The red and yellow of falling leaves in the mid day’s wind The rustic look of an ancient barn Then I wonder, would anyone notice if I were to trespass Would they care? Could I steal that perfect shot without getting myself into trouble? A picture is worth a thousand words And I want to own an infinite number of them 38
