General description<br />

Wait<strong>or</strong>e Swamp is a small <strong>coastal</strong> peat swamp <strong>in</strong> an area <strong>of</strong> <strong>coastal</strong> dunes. The swamp is an<br />

imp<strong>or</strong>tant archaeological site conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> oldest wooden artifacts known from New<br />

Zealand (AD1380-1500). 4<br />

1.5 km south <strong>of</strong> Patea River, n<strong>or</strong>th <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Whenuakura River.<br />
