3.8 Aerial photograph<br />

An aerial photograph has been provided f<strong>or</strong> each <strong>coastal</strong> area <strong>of</strong> <strong>local</strong> <strong>or</strong> <strong>regional</strong><br />

<strong>significance</strong>. The aerial photographs identify <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>f<strong>or</strong>mation:<br />

Physical location<br />

Land tenure, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g land owned by <strong>the</strong> Crown (i.e. Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Conservation adm<strong>in</strong>istered estates), district council’s (i.e. recreation reserves) and<br />

private land which has public access rights attached (i.e. esplanade strips)<br />

F<strong>or</strong>med and unf<strong>or</strong>med roads.<br />

A photograph <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general area is provided f<strong>or</strong> most sites.<br />

4. Appendix I<br />

Maps show<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> location <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>vent<strong>or</strong>y sites, unf<strong>or</strong>med roads and subdivisions<br />

located adjacent to <strong>the</strong> coast are shown <strong>in</strong> Appendix I.<br />

5. Def<strong>in</strong>itions<br />

Amenity values means those natural <strong>or</strong> physical qualities and characteristics <strong>of</strong> an<br />

area that contribute to people’s appreciation <strong>of</strong> its pleasantness, aes<strong>the</strong>tic coherence,<br />

and cultural and recreational attributes.<br />

Archaeological site means any place <strong>in</strong> New Zealand associated with human activity<br />

which occurred m<strong>or</strong>e than 100 years bef<strong>or</strong>e that time.<br />

Coastal <strong>areas</strong> <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong> <strong>coastal</strong> mar<strong>in</strong>e area, dune systems, estuaries and <strong>areas</strong><br />

adjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> coast where <strong>coastal</strong> vegetation, processes and features dom<strong>in</strong>ate.<br />

Endangered means species <strong>in</strong> danger <strong>of</strong> ext<strong>in</strong>ction and whose survival is unlikely if<br />

<strong>the</strong> causal fact<strong>or</strong>s cont<strong>in</strong>ue operat<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Endemic means a species which is conf<strong>in</strong>ed to New Zealand and is not found<br />

elsewhere.<br />

Endemic subspecies means a subspecies <strong>or</strong> geographic race which is conf<strong>in</strong>ed to<br />

New Zealand.<br />

Fauna means all <strong>the</strong> animal life <strong>of</strong> a given place <strong>or</strong> time.<br />

Fl<strong>or</strong>a means all <strong>the</strong> plant life <strong>of</strong> a given place <strong>or</strong> time.<br />

Fur seal haul-out is an area where fur seals are able to come out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> water. The<br />

<strong>areas</strong> are usually flat and located at sea level.<br />

Ge<strong>or</strong>epreservation <strong>Invent<strong>or</strong>y</strong> is a list<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> significant geological features held by <strong>the</strong><br />

Geological Society <strong>of</strong> New Zealand.<br />
