General description<br />

This area consists <strong>of</strong> a beach settlement and is a popular recreational area. The Wa<strong>in</strong>gong<strong>or</strong>o<br />

River is <strong>the</strong> sou<strong>the</strong>rn most stony stream <strong>in</strong> Taranaki. The high cliffs at <strong>the</strong> river mouth and<br />

coast consist <strong>of</strong> mudstone, shell beds and sands overlaid with tephra. 4 Offsh<strong>or</strong>e is a reef<br />

system .<br />

Location<br />

The Wa<strong>in</strong>gong<strong>or</strong>o River is located adjacent to <strong>the</strong> Ohawe settlement, 8 km west <strong>of</strong> Hawera.<br />

Four Mile Reef is approximately 6.5 km <strong>of</strong>fsh<strong>or</strong>e from Ohawe Beach.<br />

Public access<br />

Excellent - Access to Ohawe Beach is via Rangatapu Street from <strong>the</strong> Ohawe Beach<br />

settlement. Public toilets and a boat ramp are provided. Access to <strong>the</strong><br />

Wa<strong>in</strong>gong<strong>or</strong>o River Mouth is via <strong>the</strong> beach from Rangatapu Street.<br />
