guaranteed only <strong>to</strong> the required specification, rather than the capabilities of the<br />
fabrication process.<br />
CONCLUSION<br />
Judicious evaluation of the <strong>radiation</strong> fields coupled with a stringent analysis of<br />
application requirements can yield electronic systems capable of performing well <strong>to</strong><br />
ionizing doses of 100 Mrad <strong>and</strong> particle fluences of 10 14 <strong>and</strong> probably 10 15 cm -2 .<br />
Developing <strong>radiation</strong>-<strong>resistant</strong> systems does require great attention <strong>to</strong> detail <strong>and</strong><br />
substantially more testing effort than conventional designs, but the effort is<br />
necessary if we are <strong>to</strong> exploit the high-luminosity accelera<strong>to</strong>rs on the horizon. For<br />
many applications we are limited less by technology than by ingenuity.<br />
