Polyporus umbellatus Fries<br />

Introduction: This fleshy polypore has long been a favor<strong>it</strong>e edible. Of all the species represented in<br />

the Genus Polyporus, P. umbellatus is the most fragile and delicate. This mushroom forms an underground<br />

tuber-like structure, a scierotium, which has figured prominently in Chinese<br />

especially in the treatment of lung cancer.<br />

Common Names: Zhu Ling (Chinese for "Hog Tuber")<br />

Chorei-ma<strong>it</strong>ake (Japanese for "Wild Boar's<br />

Dung Ma<strong>it</strong>ake")<br />

Tsuchi-ma<strong>it</strong>ake (Japanese for"Earth Ma<strong>it</strong>ake")<br />

Taxonomic Synonyms & Considerations: Gilbertson and Ryvarden (1987) follow trad<strong>it</strong>ion by<br />

keeping this mushroom w<strong>it</strong>hin the Genus Polyporus, i.e. Polyporus umbellatus Fr. This mushroom is<br />

commonly referred to as Grifola umbellata (Persoon: Fries) Donk and more infrequently called<br />

Dendropolyporus umbellatus (Pers.:Fr.) Julich.<br />

Macroscopically Grifolafrondosa,<br />

Ma<strong>it</strong>ake, appears to be a closerelative, but biologically the two<br />

have uni4uely different life cycles. The close appearance of P. umbellatus and G. frondosa easily con-<br />
