This species often forms large clusters.<br />

Distribution: Growing in eastern North America, Europe, and temperate regions of Asia (Japan &<br />

Korea).<br />

Natural Hab<strong>it</strong>at: Fru<strong>it</strong>ing in the late summer and fall, primarily on the stumps of oaks, occasionally<br />

chestnut. Dr. Alexander Sm<strong>it</strong>h's comments that the largest specimens he found were "at the edge of an<br />

old sawdust pile in an oak-hickory woods" and that this species "is a highly prized esculent" should<br />

encourage cultivators in their pursu<strong>it</strong> of outdoor cultivation methods. (Sm<strong>it</strong>h (1949), pgs. 509—510.)<br />

Microscopic Features: Spores dark gray brown, 6.0-7.5 x 3.5-4. 0 p, smooth, ellipsoid, w<strong>it</strong>h a faint<br />

germ pore. Cheilocystidia, pleurocystidia and clamp connections present. Context monom<strong>it</strong>ic.<br />

Available Strains: Strains are available from most culture libraries, including several from the American<br />

Type Culture Collection.ATCC #64244 is a good fru<strong>it</strong>ing strain and is featured in this book.<br />
