Introduction: A favor<strong>it</strong>e of Midwest mushroom hunters, great clusters of this species are often<br />

found on dead hardwoods,<br />

especially stumps, logs, and soils rich in wood debris. The Japanese have<br />

pioneered cultivation using techniques similar to Shi<strong>it</strong>ake. Hypholoma sub! ater<strong>it</strong>iufli is another excellent<br />

candidate for recycling stumps. In Japan, a preferred outdoor method is to inoculate hardwood<br />

logs that are then partially buried in shady, natural settings. Fairly productive indoors, this<br />

mushroom has yet to be cultivated commercially in North America.<br />

Description: Cap 2-7 cm. broad, hemispheric to convex, expanding w<strong>it</strong>h age to broadly convex, and<br />

eventually plane in age. Cap tan to brown to brick red, darker towards the center, and a lighter yellow<br />

near the margin. Margin incurved at first and covered w<strong>it</strong>h floccose remnants of the partial veil, soon<br />

straightening, and eventually uplifted at matur<strong>it</strong>y. Flesh relatively thick, bruising yellowish. Gills<br />

close, bluntly attached to the stem, pallid at first, becoming dark purple gray when mature. Stem 5-10<br />
