Agrocybe aeger<strong>it</strong>a (Brigantini) Singer<br />

Introduction This mushroom has a mellow and attractive flavor when young. Agrocybe aeger<strong>it</strong>a<br />

grows prolifically on deciduous wood debris, often forming large clusters—both in nature and in the<br />

controlled environment of the growing room. This species is an excellent candidate for stump recycling,<br />

especially in the southeastern Un<strong>it</strong>ed States.<br />

Taxonomic Synonyms & ConsideratiOflS A variable fungus which may well be spl<strong>it</strong> into several<br />

distinct taxa w<strong>it</strong>h more research, this mushroom was once called a Pholiota, P. aeger<strong>it</strong>a. Other synonyms<br />

are Pholiota cylindracea Gillet (Singer, 1986), orAgrocybe cylindracea (DC. ex Fr.) Maire, a<br />

name still preferred by Asian mycologists. Watling (1982) prefers Agrocybe cylindrica (De Candolle<br />

ex Fries) Maire. Agrocybe molesta (Lasch) Singer andA. praecox (Pers. ex Fr.) Fayod are related species<br />

and may be cultivated using the same methods described here. Their flavor, in the opinion of<br />

many mycophagists, is not as good as A. aeger<strong>it</strong>a. More work on the taxa of the Figure 192. Mycelium 01 A. aeger<strong>it</strong>a3and 7 days after inoculation.<br />
