The common name of this plant (Figure 48 and Plate zB) is<br />
descriptive of the color of the cap, which is from i to 4 inches<br />
wide, convex, reddish brown in the center, paler toward the margin.<br />
The gills of young specimens are at first pale gray, but as<br />
the spores mature they become grayish brown, then purplebrown.<br />
The stem is from 2 to 5 inches long, slender and curved,<br />
the upper part pale and the lower portion colored reddish brown<br />
like the cap. The plant grows in dense clumps around decaying<br />
stumps and tree roots. It is likely to be common in the fall.<br />
