WHITE SPORE PRINT
Poisonous: AM ANITA VERNA
Amanita verna (Figures 7 and 8) is considered by some to be
not a separate species but a variety of A. phalloides, the chief difference
being that its cap is pure white. In the northern Lake
States A. verna is very abundant almost every fall, and on a morning's
walk one can see literally thousands of beautiful and stately
white specimens, growing singly and in groups of three or four,
especially in aspen woods and hazel brush. It is a beautiful plant,
but deadly. Although both species are more common in forested
regions, they are by no means restricted to these areas.
Poisonous: AMANITA MUSCARIA (Fly Agaric)
The species name is taken from the name of the common
housefly, Musca domestica, because the fungus has a peculiar and
fatal attraction for these busy and annoying pests. If pieces of
A. muscaria (Figures 9 and 10) are broken up and placed in a shal-
Figure 9. Amanlta muscarla (Fly Agaric). Poisonous.
