COMMON EDIBLE MUSHROOMS<br />

As with morels, the general shape of the shaggymane is so<br />

characteristic (see Plate iB) that if you have seen a good illustration<br />

of it you cannot fail to recognize it on sight. Normally shaggymanes<br />

grow in groups of a few to several dozen on lawns, along<br />

boulevards, in grassy parks and fields in town and country from<br />

spring until fall, and they often come up in the same place year<br />

after year. If the lower edge of the cap has begun to turn black it<br />

should be cut away before cooking. Shaggymanes cannot be kept<br />

for more than a few hours, unfortunately, even in a refrigerator,<br />

because they continue to ripen and are transformed rather rapidly<br />

into a black liquid.<br />
