TOOTH FUNGI
Figure 60. Hydmnn coralloides (Coral Fungus). Edible.
All the branches bear short, awl-shaped teeth that point downward,
as in the rest of the genus.
This species is found only on decayed hardwood logs but is
not at all uncommon. Because of its size and pure white color it
can often be recognized at a distance and, since a single fruit
body may weigh a pound or more, one does not have to find
many to suffice for a meal.
Both of these fungi can probably be ranked as only average in
edibility. Their flavor is attractive enough, but it tends to be
rather bland, and the texture is somewhat tough. One point in
their favor, however, is that they are seldom inhabited by insects.
