point upward. The number of branches in a clump varies from a<br />
few dozen to several hundred, and a large fruit body will be 5 or<br />
6 inches across and 3 or 4 inches high. The color varies from pale<br />
tan to brown or ashy gray. They grow on old decayed logs and<br />
stumps and on the ground around dead trees and can be found<br />
in abundance throughout the wooded areas of most of the North<br />
Temperate Zone. It is entirely probable that some species have<br />
better culinary qualities than have been attributed to them in the<br />
past and that if given a fair trial by those willing to experiment<br />
with methods of preparation they would acquire an excellent<br />
reputation as edible fungi.<br />

number of species are described and illustrated, many of them in<br />
