All Clavarias are edible, and although the texture of most of<br />
them is definitely tough, the flavor is usually excellent, and they<br />
lend themselves readily to drying. There are many different spe-<br />

cies, some of them too small to deserve notice for our purposes,<br />
but others large, conspicuous, easily recognized, and common.<br />
The photograph of Clavaria stricta growing on a rotten aspen<br />
log (Figure 58) shows the general Clavaria form and habit better<br />
than words. Characteristic are (i) their upright growth and<br />
(2) their repeatedly branching stems, the tips of which always<br />
