3. Activities planned<br />
3.1. General goals.<br />
In the year 2002 we plan to continue the debate over the issues concerning the origin <strong>and</strong><br />
evolution of the <strong>Caribbean</strong> plate (Boston meeting Nov. 2001), with special emphasis in the<br />
plate boundaries in Central America (Guatemala meeting) <strong>and</strong> the Lesser Antilles Barbados<br />
meeting).<br />
3.2. Specific meetings <strong>and</strong> field trips (please indicate participation from developing<br />
countries)<br />
Geological Society of America Annual Meeting. Novenber 1-10, 2001. At the<br />
request of the <strong>IGCP</strong> <strong>and</strong> the GSA, we shall participate in the Annual Geological Society of<br />
America Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. We have been invited to present papers at the<br />
GSA Topical Session “Focus on <strong>IGCP</strong>: Modern <strong>and</strong> Ancient <strong>Plate</strong> Boundaries <strong>and</strong><br />
Orogens”. Participation of Cuban, American, <strong>and</strong> other delegates will be partially supported<br />
by the project.<br />
Motagua Fault Zone, Guatemala. January 28-31, 2002. The project will hold a<br />
Workshop <strong>and</strong> Field Trip to the Motagua Suture Zone of Guatemala. This event is being<br />
organized by the Italian-<strong>Caribbean</strong> Group, with the kind co-operation of the Sociedad<br />
Geologica de Guatemala <strong>and</strong> other Guatemalan institutions. Motagua suture zone in<br />
Guatemala is part of the northwestern boundary of the <strong>Caribbean</strong> plate <strong>and</strong> an important onshore<br />
segment of the <strong>Caribbean</strong> plate boundary. The project will partially support the field<br />
transportation <strong>and</strong> the participation of delegates from Cuba, Guatemala, Costa Rica,<br />
Venezuela <strong>and</strong> USA.<br />
16 th <strong>Caribbean</strong> Geological Conference. June 16-21, 2002. The project will hold a<br />
Workshop <strong>and</strong> Field Trip during the 16 th <strong>Caribbean</strong> Geological Conference, in Barbados,<br />
BWI. The purpose of this Workshop <strong>and</strong> Field Trip is to study <strong>and</strong> evaluate further the<br />
Lesser Antilles isl<strong>and</strong> arc, the easternmost boundary of the <strong>Caribbean</strong> plate. The project will<br />
support the field trip by covering the transportation expenses, <strong>and</strong> will support participants<br />
