Silk fibroin has many functional applications in
biomedical industry viz. cosmetics, toiletries,
pharmaceutical preparations, tissue regeneration
and repair, scaffolds and matrices. It has an
excellent natural moisture-adjusting property. It is
used as cosmetic for dry skin. It prevents and cures
dermatitis and keeps the skin hygiene. It is a highly
promising protein and a potential biomaterial.
A classical biological control for management of
papaya mealy bug a invasive pest using effective
parasitoid viz., Acerophagus papayae was
developed 2010 which prevented farmers of Tamil
Nadu by uprooting the mulberry.
Eighteen staff of different units was trained in mass
production and five mass production units were
established to mass-produce the parasitoid which
helped in control of papaya mealy bug in a very
short span.
The existing CRC technology has been fine tuned to
suit the requirement of bed space and quantum of
leaf for the increased number of grains from 50,000
to 60,000 per 100 DFLs. It is popularized and used
by CRCs.
The antiviral protein (BmNox) has been cloned,
sequenced and expressed. The protein marker is
being used as a marker for developing NPV tolerant
silkworm breeds.
Developed a package involving seri residue compost
enriched with useful and antagonistic microbes
along with neem oil cake for control of root
diseases in mulberry and curtailing FYM up to 10
MT/ha besides improving the soil health.
Developed a suitable technology for decomposing
the mulberry shoot up to 92% within in 150 days.
Package of practices for rearing of Eri silkworms in
South Indian condition was developed.
