the low building in the distance, so incongruous<br />

with the scene of splendor. She<br />

answered, "That is Tebah, 1 intended to float<br />

upon the great waters."<br />

"A boat?" I exclaimed in astonishment.<br />

"It is far from the river <strong>and</strong> much too large<br />

to float upon its surface."<br />

"Yes," said the woman, with a smile, "that<br />

enormous boat has been for quite a time in<br />

building--the work of a fanatical old man<br />

<strong>and</strong> his sons, who believe that this valley will<br />

presently become a sea, upon which they will<br />

be securely borne during a great Flood which<br />

they say will visit the earth. They declare<br />

that the God of Heaven is displeased with<br />

the present state of the world <strong>and</strong> has determined<br />

to destroy all living beings.<br />

"It may be true, as the old man says, that<br />

there is a God in Heaven, but Lord Satanas<br />

certainly possesses the world; all is now un-<br />
