Two of the young men were dark <strong>and</strong> stern,<br />

but the other was fair <strong>and</strong> stately as a palmtree.<br />

He pushed from his white brow the<br />

curling locks, <strong>and</strong> surveyed the royal train<br />

with grave curiosity until his eyes rested<br />

upon the chariot. In a moment there came<br />

into his face a flush <strong>and</strong> bright consciousness<br />

like recognition, <strong>and</strong> as we moved forward,<br />

he seemed about to follow. We passed<br />

from sight, <strong>and</strong> my cheeks burned with<br />

shame, for had I not too earnestly returned<br />

his gaze?<br />

But why distress myself? Why care for<br />

the stranger I may never meet again, <strong>and</strong><br />

who, perchance, forgot me before I reached<br />
