with his angelic confederates. At the right<br />

of this imposing edifice stood another, vastly<br />

larger <strong>and</strong> more wonderful, the glorious Palace<br />

of Light. It was built upon massive<br />

arches of stone, in shape like a star, thus enclosing<br />

a great court. Upon the long lines<br />

of wall, which formed the star-points, rose<br />

marble structures, miracles of beauty.<br />

Toward the sunrise <strong>and</strong> sunset, <strong>and</strong> to the<br />

north <strong>and</strong> south, four lofty towers overlaid<br />

with gold aspired to reach the skies. Upon<br />

the highest of these a tall shaft was erected,<br />

<strong>and</strong> around it was entwined the monstrous<br />

image of a winged serpent. As the breeze<br />

struck its pinions, it writhed around the<br />

fiery eyes glittered like those of living"<br />
