each huge beast was a Darv<strong>and</strong>, robed in scarlet<br />

<strong>and</strong> holding a guiding w<strong>and</strong> in his h<strong>and</strong>.<br />

In front <strong>and</strong> rear were seen a b<strong>and</strong> of similar<br />

gigantic men, clad also in scarlet, with black<br />

plumes upon their heads, <strong>and</strong> marshalled in<br />

battle array. These I knew must be another<br />

detachment of those terrible beings, of whom<br />

my father had spoken--Darv<strong>and</strong>s, the offspring<br />

of angels <strong>and</strong> women. Strong <strong>and</strong><br />

powerful were they, but the expression of<br />

their faces made me recoil, <strong>and</strong> even fly for<br />

protection to the side of Satanas <strong>and</strong> Hesperus,<br />

between whom Samoula stood, never<br />

so lovely <strong>and</strong> radiant as at this moment.<br />

Depending from her head <strong>and</strong> enveloping<br />

her perfect figure was a transparent veil,<br />

not of linen, but of a texture similar to the<br />
