over my father’s heart. The bright being<br />

spoke again: "Smite the girl also, Hesperus."<br />

"Not so, my Lord Satanas," said Hesperus,<br />

surveying me attentively; "this is no common<br />

maiden. Seest thou not her nature?"<br />

"Unlike all others," exclaimed Satanas,<br />

"clear <strong>and</strong> strong, perhaps dangerous. She<br />

must die !" "My lord," responded Hesperus,<br />

"I have done you some service; I have<br />

hitherto asked no favor, but now I would<br />

save this maiden," hesitating a moment--<br />

"for myself."<br />

"The Star of Evening would be reflected<br />

in beautiful eyes at last," said Satanas,<br />

turning upon him a smile of surprise <strong>and</strong><br />

triumph.<br />

I shivered, but there was no motion; I<br />

groaned, but I heard not my own voice. I<br />

lay as in the deepest swoon<br />

till the morning<br />
