quiet cove where we had first l<strong>and</strong>ed. Tranquillity<br />

was in some measure restored as distance<br />

increased between ourselves <strong>and</strong> the<br />

appalling scenes of the morning, yet was the<br />

evening benediction of Allimades unusually<br />

earnest. Fatigued by the unwonted adventures<br />

of the day, all of the party, except myself,<br />

were soon wrapped in deep slumber.<br />

Cheros <strong>and</strong> Aldeth rested quietly under a<br />

palm-tree on shore, my parents reclined upon<br />

a platform raised under the tent-screen, <strong>and</strong><br />

I lay upon a mat at their feet. The air was<br />

serene <strong>and</strong> I tranquilly rested, listening to<br />

the only sound that varied the intensity of<br />

silence--the ripple of the river as it lightly<br />

flowed past our boat.<br />

Forgotten by the world, far from any<br />

human habitation, in the midst of a great<br />

wilderness, shrouded by the shadows of<br />

night, what cause was there for apprehension<br />
