stall at the farthest end of the boat. His<br />

mate passively followed; the bar was raised<br />

<strong>and</strong> they were made secure.<br />

This event was so significant that a solemn<br />

silence fell upon us; but we had little<br />

time to consider before a loud bellow was<br />

heard <strong>and</strong> a huge elephant with his mate<br />

came plunging across the plain, throwing his<br />

trunk in the air <strong>and</strong> sniffing in fear as the<br />

lion had done. He also came near <strong>and</strong> suffered<br />

himself to be led quietly to his quarters<br />

in the boat. Soon a frightened stag <strong>and</strong><br />

doe peeped timidly over the hill <strong>and</strong> surveying<br />

our party for a moment, came to the<br />

place where we were st<strong>and</strong>ing; two beautiful<br />

dogs followed them, but looked not upon<br />

the game, only upward at the sky <strong>and</strong><br />

howled.<br />

And now the valley seemed alive with animals,<br />

thronging over the hills <strong>and</strong> swarming<br />

from the groves. None molested another; all<br />

seemed urged forward by the instinct that
