THE TEBAH AND ITS INMATES<br />

HE first day of my new life is made<br />

memorable by other marvels.<br />

We were awakened at dawn by a deep<br />

roar, as of a wild beast coming down the<br />

valley. Hurrying to the door an extraordinary<br />

sight met our eyes. A large lion with<br />

his mate stood irresolute upon the bank of<br />

the river. He bent his shaggy head to the<br />

earth, smelling the ground as if he perceived<br />

something unusual, then stopped abruptly,<br />

looked up to the sky, sniffed the air, roared<br />

again <strong>and</strong> ran forward. Frightened by his<br />

savage mien, we all hastily retreated, except<br />

the Prophet, who went out to meet him.<br />

The ferocious beast crouched low, dragged<br />

himself upon the ground <strong>and</strong> crept close to<br />

the master, fawning <strong>and</strong> rubbing against<br />

his side. The Prophet fondled the lion as<br />

he would a dog <strong>and</strong> led him unresistingly<br />
