which in letters black as night, I discerned<br />

the inscription: "The Hour of Doom."<br />

Again I followed the solemn eyes of the<br />

angel, which now were fixed with intense<br />

eagerness upon a luminous spot high above<br />

the atmosphere of the earth. There, like a<br />

phantom host in battle array, I saw the rebel<br />

angels upon their steeds of flame, <strong>and</strong> by his<br />

superior brightness knew that Satanas held<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>. In the thickest of the conflict<br />

between the powers of darkness <strong>and</strong> the powers<br />

of light, the towering form of the great<br />

opponent of God flashed forth a blaze that<br />

dazzled <strong>and</strong> appalled all who opposed him.<br />

O intensest demoniacal rage, O majestic<br />

wrath of Heaven, how can mortal speak their<br />

power !<br />

Before this infernal blast of demon-fury<br />

the angelic b<strong>and</strong> seemed to slowly give way,<br />

<strong>and</strong> the triumphant voice of Satanas, clear<br />

but distant, rang out like a mighty trumpet.<br />
