Beneath a dome clear as crystal I saw the<br />

Dial of Time. There are the cycles measured,<br />

there are recorded the immeasurable eternities.<br />

And above all was the Great Center,<br />

which binds the sweet influences of the stars.<br />

At this sight I trembled <strong>and</strong> cried out with<br />

fear lest it might be loosened <strong>and</strong> crash<br />

through all the worlds. But a mighty angel<br />

answered my fear, saying, "Omnipotence<br />

alone can loosen the b<strong>and</strong>s established by<br />

Eternal Will. Child of earth, look thou westward."<br />

Straining my eyes through illimitable<br />

plains of ether, I perceived a long line of<br />

worlds, stretching in almost endless continuity.<br />

One immense star was wheeling into<br />

place, ! silent, sublime, awful<br />

In a moment more the angel spake again.<br />

"Behold, O child of earth!" I followed with<br />

my eyes to where he directed with his golden<br />

w<strong>and</strong>. His eyes were fastened on the great<br />

Dial, <strong>and</strong> following their inclination, I perceived<br />

that the index was slowly sinking to
