god l a goddess l Glory to Samoula, peerless<br />

in beauty l Glory to Satanas, Light-creator,<br />

King of the Earth <strong>and</strong> the Sun!"<br />

This blasphemous adulation of created beings<br />

filled me with horror, a feeling which<br />

seemed to find voice in a growl of thunder<br />

from a black cloud overhead, as it suddenly<br />

closed together.<br />

And now the blare of trumpets announced<br />

the approach of the tribute-bearers, an almost<br />

interminable procession, who were this<br />

day to lay the treasures of earth <strong>and</strong> sea at<br />

forms clad in silver scales, <strong>and</strong> on their heads<br />

nodding plumes. Fair were they in complexion,<br />

with light, curling locks; for though the<br />

numerous wives of Satanas had been of every<br />
