Beneath a canopy of silver lace, the couch<br />

of down was spread; around the apartment<br />

were placed gold <strong>and</strong> ivory furniture, mirrors<br />

<strong>and</strong> statues, <strong>and</strong> above all, curtains of<br />

azure, adjusted for shade or seclusion.<br />

Within this atmosphere of light <strong>and</strong><br />

shadow, color <strong>and</strong> perfume, stood the royal<br />

pair, unapproachable in majesty <strong>and</strong> beauty.<br />

The world had never seen a vision of such<br />

transcendent glory. Satanas, the Lightbearer,<br />

was attired in a robe of heavenly blue,<br />

bedecked with diamonds <strong>and</strong> jewelled fringe<br />

that swept the floor like dancing flames.<br />

Upon his forehead blazed a pentacle of<br />

starry gems, from which issued a spray as<br />

it were a fountain of fire, <strong>and</strong> in his h<strong>and</strong><br />

was held a sceptre set with similar glory,<br />

while from every jewel-point quivered <strong>and</strong><br />

flashed the light peculiar to his majestic<br />

presence.<br />

Samoula, as Dawn, recipient <strong>and</strong> reflector<br />

of light, was draped, or, rather, enshrouded,<br />

in garments rosy <strong>and</strong> nebulous as the cloud
