the lattice, I fled not, but breathlessly observed<br />

his motions, wondering thereat with<br />

great amazement. He beckoned the clouds;<br />

they came, <strong>and</strong> he shook out their folds; he<br />

called the winds, <strong>and</strong> they rushed to obey<br />

his m<strong>and</strong>ates; in the vast cavern of his mouth<br />

were they confined till driven forth to do his<br />

bidding. Across his vague shoulders were<br />

flung iris-hued bows, <strong>and</strong> his quiver held<br />

forked lightnings.<br />

With fitful force he began to labor, raising<br />

from the corner towers tall columns of<br />

vapors, white <strong>and</strong> glistening as the foam of<br />

the ocean. These he united by prismatic<br />

arches thrown across the court, meeting at<br />

a point above the throne. Over the lofty<br />

dome thus formed, this awful being stretched<br />

a cloud-curtain rosy in hue, which softened<br />
