arches were the banners, with tinkling bells<br />

wrought into the significant words:<br />

"Satanas <strong>and</strong> Samoula."<br />

"’Queen of the Earth."<br />

"Bride of the Sun."<br />

Gilded pavilions were made ready to receive<br />

the queens of the other Devas, <strong>and</strong> in<br />

the center of the court rose a great throne,<br />

upon which Satanas was to crown Samoula<br />

at once Bride <strong>and</strong> Queen. This throne, of<br />

more than human gr<strong>and</strong>eur, rested upon the<br />

backs of four brazen dragons, from whose<br />

mouths flowed a perpetual stream of Homa.<br />

There were no steps to the throne, but from<br />

a wide opening in the wall of the Palace,<br />

leading directly to it, was an aerial pathway<br />

resembling a broad sunbeam.<br />

As I observed these wonders, a sudden<br />

hush pervaded the court. Each workman<br />

suspended his labor, <strong>and</strong> a subdued murmur<br />

ran through the crowd: "Make way, make<br />

way! Orm<strong>and</strong>u, the Prince of the Winds,
