THE PAGEANT<br />

Coronation morning rose. At break of<br />

day the great court was astir with workmen<br />

<strong>and</strong> Darv<strong>and</strong>s who were to complete the<br />

preparations. As my windows opened upon<br />

this court, the noise awakened me, <strong>and</strong> I rose<br />

<strong>and</strong> watched their labor. Towers, walls,<br />

houses <strong>and</strong> hanging gardens, all bore a festive<br />

appearance. Flags <strong>and</strong> ensigns fluttered<br />

in the breeze, garl<strong>and</strong>s hung from the shaft<br />

of the great serpent, flowering shrubs <strong>and</strong><br />

vines filled every projection, <strong>and</strong> the air was<br />

heavy with perfume. Across the great<br />
