This was my moment for flight, but by<br />

reason of fear <strong>and</strong> astonishment I was rendered<br />

powerless. However, the reflection<br />

that delay would but increase the danger of<br />

discovery gave me supernatural strength.<br />

Noislessly I crept from my place of concealment<br />

<strong>and</strong> safely outside the gate of the<br />

Tower, flew rather than ran to my retreat in<br />

the Palace. Once only I dared to glance<br />

backward. I had not been discovered.<br />

Upon the dizzy height of the dome stood<br />

Hesperus alone. His eyes, which blenched<br />

not at what confronted him, earnestly<br />

scanned the vault of heaven. Absorbed,<br />

motionless, he strove to forecast the possibilities<br />

of the morrow.<br />
