But Satanas in wrath rebuked the other.<br />

He will yield nothing to the Lord of Heaven;<br />

not even shall the approaching marriage be<br />

deferred. Naught but utter ruin can change<br />

his purpose. He owns the Earth; he holds<br />

it by might. If it be destroyed in the fury<br />

of the elements, then <strong>and</strong> not till then, shall<br />

it be ab<strong>and</strong>oned. Themselves he defies the<br />

Eternal to destroy! He cannot quench the<br />

spark which He Himself has furnished <strong>and</strong><br />

which surely could not but be immortal like<br />

Ah, how art thou blinded <strong>and</strong> deceived, O<br />

fallen ! Spirit, once so wise<br />

And now Satanas rouses the courage of<br />

the other Devas by recounting the triumphs<br />

of former struggles, their passion by mention<br />

of their beautiful wives <strong>and</strong> children,<br />

their pride by thought of province <strong>and</strong><br />
