signs of awakening life, <strong>and</strong> soon reached<br />

the Palace. As I entered the chamber, to<br />

my surprise I found Uronion, the husb<strong>and</strong><br />

of Minerva, awaiting my return, in whose<br />

countenance I noted a grave shadow. His<br />

features were overcast with melancholy.<br />

He presented me a linen scroll sent by<br />

Minerva, which I opened, <strong>and</strong> in astonishment<br />

read as follows:<br />

"Peace be with thee, Aloma, child of<br />

Heaven. Thy coming was the dawn of light<br />

to one long overshadowed with that gloom<br />

which is the penalty of sin. The dew of thy<br />

pure youth fell upon my parched <strong>and</strong> blackened<br />

heart. The light of thy innocent smile<br />

warmed to life the withered blossoms of love<br />

<strong>and</strong> pity; but far better than all, thy simple<br />

piety awoke the faith of my childhood. With<br />

horror I reviewed my life, <strong>and</strong> repented.
