Sweet Disorder
Methodist camp meeting,
Oak Bluffs, Martha’s Vineyard, 1880s
Sawn with bright, ingenious blades,
wooden lilies bounding porches
open petals summer wide.
Gothic windows. Late nights. Torches.
Bandsaw pistils rise inside.
Men and women writhe in hay,
seek to burn, blow trumpets, howl,
underneath the pulpit’s sway,
speak in wondrous tongues. And foul.
Methodist madness cuts two ways,
jigsaws sweethearts, souls enslaved,
meeting lasts for thirty days,
saved, I’m saved, I’m saved, I’m saved.
